Income tax assistance
N.C. A&T is a site for the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, a free tax preparation service available to university students, faculty and staff, with incomes of $58,000 or less. To make an appointment, call Dr. Gwendolyn McFadden-Wade at 336-285-3377. Tax preparations will be held in Merrick Hall, room 238. Professional development
Staff, supervisors and managers are encouraged to register for the Equal Employment Opportunity Institute (EEOI) Professional Development course, offered as a part of the Center For Leadership and Organizational Excellence (CLOE) spring 2014 catalog. The nine-hour workshop that focuses on federal and state EEO laws, anti-discrimination practices and the values of diversity, will be Wednesday, April 16, 9 a.m.–4 p.m., and Thursday, April 17, 9 a.m.–noon, at 1020 E. Wendover Avenue, room 007.
EEOI became a legal mandate for state government managers and supervisors when the North Carolina Assembly ratified House Bill 959 on June 26, 1991; the bill became effective July 1, 1991.
Workshop facilitators are Sylvia Anderson and Linda Mangum, interim assistant vice chancellor of human resources/director of employee relations and Affirmative Action officer, respectively, in the Division of Human Resources.
Earth Week
The second annual Earth Week at the North Carolina A&T State University, April 21–25. As part of this year’s events, this year, on Monday, April 21, from 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., students and community members will band together to pick up trash around the campus’ surrounding neighborhoods as well as rehabilitate neighborhood landmarks. The main focus will be the “muddy creek” on Lindsay Avenue as well as sort trash to promote recycling on campus.
In partnership with NC Cooperative Extension and Dr. Manny Reyes, the university will also conduct a stream stabilization workshop on Monday. For details about these and other activities during the week, contact Mary-Ann Ibeziako at 336- 285-4524.
Franchising opportunities
The School of Business and Economics is hosting the 2014 Greensboro, N.C., Opportunities in Franchising program, Wednesday, April 30, 5–8 p.m., in Craig Hall, room 111. “Franchising: A Business Model that Works Education Program” includes fundamentals of franchising, experiences in franchising and finance and technical assistance resources. Deadline for faculty summer employment
Internal Salary Authorization forms for summer employment of EPA employees on contract and grant funds must be received in the Office of EPA Salary and Budget Administration by Wednesday, April 16. Summer employment includes all work performed in the areas of Sponsored Programs (i.e., contracts, subcontracts and grants), Summer School, Distance Learning and Continuing Education and Extension. The period for summer employment is May 15–Aug. 13.
Dr. Zerihun Assefa, professor of chemistry, and Carlos Crawford, graduate student in the energy and environmental systems (EES) program, have published a peer reviewed article, “Synthesis, structures, and photoluminescence properties of lanthanide dicyanoaurates containing dimeric aurophilic interactions,” in Inorganica Chimica Acta 414, (2014, pp. 240-249). The paper is co-authored by Professor Richard Sykora of the University of South Alabama.
Dr. Vivian Barnette, executive director of counseling services, has successfully completed (in its entirety) the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) specialty board certification in psychology. This certification attests to her excellence in meeting the advanced education, training, and professional standing established by the speciality, as well as examination designed to assess the competencies required to provide quality services. The mission of ABPP is to increase consumer protection through examination and certification of psychologists who demonstrate competence in approved specialty areas in professional psychology.
Barnette was recently appointed as a member of the Awards and Recognition Committee for the Society of Counseling Psychology of the American Psychological Association. She is serving a three-year term.
Dr. Lauren Davis, associate professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, and her Ph.D. student, Jessye Bemley, published a paper that has been named Outstanding Paper of 2013 by the Journal of Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Management. Through their paper, “Pre-positioning commodities to repair maritime navigational aids,” Davis and Bemley explore the effectiveness of pre-positioning strategies for port recovery in response to a natural disaster.
“The evaluation of multicultural teaching concerns among pre-service teachers in the South,” a paper co-authored by Stacy K. Vincent, Andrea T. Kirby, Jacque P. Deeds and Dr. Paula E. Faulkner (pictured), has been published in Journal of Agricultural Education (Vol. 55, No. 1, pp. 152-166). Faulkner is an assistant professor in the Department of Agribusiness, Applied Economics and Agriscience Education
Nicole Pride has been appointed chief of staff, effective April 1. In this role, Pride will serve as the principal liaison and adviser to the chancellor, is a member of the chancellor’s executive cabinet, and will provide strategic and operational support for internal and external constituencies. In collaboration with other members of the cabinet, this position is responsible for planning, organizing and driving the initiatives and activities of the Office of the Chancellor, as they relate to the internal operations and the external relationships of the university.
Other duties of the position include the following: manages and oversees the chancellor’s office and his day-to-day engagements, university relations, and government and state relations; coordinates and supports the board of trustees and board of visitors; serves as the liaison between UNC General Administration and the campus community; is the point of contact for A&T’s various constituent groups; and provides leadership on administrative matters.
Pride has a B.A. degree in business management and B.A. degree in economics from North Carolina State University and a M.A. degree in corporate and public communications from Seton Hall University. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in organizational leadership at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
Dr. Schenita Davis Randolph, assistant professor and Certified Nurse Educator in the School of Nursing, is the 2014 recipient of the Elsevier Exceptional Nursing Educator of the Year Award in the category of Clinical Excellence. Elsevier is the world’s leading health science publisher. This national award recognizes the work of three outstanding nursing faculty members who show exceptional skill, innovation and effectiveness in regards to promoting student learning, professionalism and self-confidence.
Kim Sowell (pictured), assistant vice chancellor for student affairs, and Dr. Laké Laosebikan-Buggs, executive director of student activities, presented a workshop, “Can I get an Aggie Pride?: The Internationalization of Aggieland,” at the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Annual Conference in Baltimore, Md. The session focused on steps being taken to achieve comprehensive internationalization at North Carolina A&T State University.
