AVC candidates’ forums

The university community is invited to an open forum for each of the three final candidates for the position of associate vice chancellor for alumni affairs. The forums will be March 17–19 in the Academic Classroom Auditorium and will begin at 2 p.m. The finalists and their schedules are Angela Monts, Monday, March 17; Rosetta Clay, Tuesday, March 18; and Isaac Thweatt, Wednesday, March 19.

Technology Week

The School of Technology will present Technology Week, March 17–21, with a variety of events throughout the week. This year’s theme is “Driving Excellence with Technology.”

 

The purpose of Technology Week is an opportunity to educate, inform and display the field of technology and its place as a career choice. Not only is technology one of the growing fields, it also meets the nation’s strategic direction to increase jobs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Forums for vice chancellor, DoIT

Four candidates for the position of vice chancellor for information technology/chief information officer are scheduled to make presentations on the topic, “Bringing together emerging IT tools to achieve Preeminence 2020 goals.”

• Monday, March 24 - Dr. Steve Chen, CIO, Hudson Valley Community College/SUNY (Troy, N.Y.)


• Wednesday, March 26 - Marlena Brown, assistant vice chancellor for information systems, Purdue University (Hammond, Ind.)


• Monday, March 31 - Alison Robinson, assistant vice president and deputy CIO, University of Maryland (College Park, Md.)

 

The presentations will be in Dowdy Administration Building, room 304, 1:30–2:45 p.m.

Skype session

The University Honors Program and the Office of Scholarships and Fellowships invite the university community to a Skype session with Emmanuel Johnson, N.C. A&T’s first recipient of the Fulbright Student Scholarship. The session will take place Tuesday, March 18, 3 p.m., in the Academic Classroom Building, room 107.

 

Johnson is currently in England where he is earning a master’s degree in robotics at the University of Birmingham. He will discuss the Fulbright program and application process, as well as his experiences in England. For more information, contact Anna Whiteside at 336-285-2030.

GALA Awards

North Carolina A&T will recognize outstanding campus and community leaders who have made significant strides in the Aggie community at the 2014 GALA Awards, which is a recognition ceremony for students, organizations, faculty, staff and community members who demonstrate excellence in leadership, scholarship and service.

 

The event is sponsored by the Office of Student Activities with the Division of Student Affairs and will be Wednesday, April 23, 6 p.m., in Harrison Auditorium. Submit nominations for individual student awards, student organization awards, faculty and staff awards, and campus community awards by following this link and completing the respective nomination form(s). Nominations will close Friday, March 21.

Staff forum

The Chancellor's Forum for Staff will be held Wednesday, March 26, 3–5 p.m., in the Academic Classroom Building Auditorium. The forum is an opportunity for staff members to stay abreast of the strategic direction of the institution. Administrators will share updates and initiatives taking place across the university. All staff members are encouraged to attend.

Chinese Golden Acrobats

Mark your calendar and plan to attend a performance by the Chinese Golden Acrobats, Thursday, April 3, at 7 p.m. in Harrison Auditorium. The event is sponsored by the 2013-14 Lyceum Series.

 

Established in 1967, and led by Lien Chi Chang and his family, the company dazzles audiences of all ages with death defying acrobatic maneuvers. Tickets are $5 for N.C. A&T faculty and staff; $15, general public; and free for A&T students with an Aggie One Card. For more information, call the Ticket Office at 336-334-7749.

HPLS symposium, golf tourney

The Second Annual Human Performance and Leisure Studies (HPLS) Symposium and Eighth Annual Callaway-Groomes Scholarship Golf Tournament will take place April 25–26 in Greensboro. The symposium will bring together professionals from across the Southeast region of the United States who are engaged in various aspects of sport, health, wellness and physical activity. It will convene on campus. The golf tournament will be held April 26 at Gillespie Golf Course. Enrichment camps

Registration has begun for this year’s Aggie Enrichment Camps for children ages 6-13. The camps will run June 16 through Aug. 1. N.C. A&T employees (permanent and temporary) may sign up for payroll deductions online. For more information contact the Summer Sessions Office at 336-334-7810.

For North Carolina A&T State University to win this year’s The Home Depot’s Retool Your School campus improvement grant competition, Aggies (and friends, family, etc.) must vote daily.

 

The Home Depot will award one major grant of $50,000, 13 minor grants of $10,000 and a Campus Pride grant worth $25,000. The major grant will be awarded to the college or university that receives the most online votes, and the Campus Pride grant will be awarded to institution chosen by a combination of voting and social media activity. To vote, visit www.ncat.edu, look under The Latest, click on Retool Your School and follow the instructions. And don’t forget to tell family and friends to vote, too.

Dr. Solomon BililgnDr. Solomon Bililgn, professor of physics, attended the March meeting of the American Physical Society (APS) in Denver, Colo. Bililign made an oral presentation, “Calibration of cavity ring-down spectrometry, integrating nephelometery, and condensation particle counting for distinguishing aerosol scattering/absorption properties,” in the Physics of Climate session. He also participated on the NSF-GEO-Idea Lab team via Skype (due to a conflict with the APS meeting). In addition, Bililign organized an international satellite meeting of the Ethiopian Physics Society in North America, of which he is the current president

Dr. Aaron “Keith” McCullough Dr. Aaron “Keith” McCullough has joined the Office of Research Services and Project Management as a technical grant writer. McCollough will assist faculty in a variety of disciplines with the writing and preparation of research proposals as well as seek funding opportunities for faculty and distribute reports, studies and other information on grant funding.

 

McCullough received his Ph.D. in education from UNC-Chapel Hill, master’s degree in adult education at N.C. A&T and his bachelor’s degree in speech communication from N.C. State University. He has worked as an adjunct faculty member in speech communication studies at A&T where he also served as a project director for programs in family and community violence prevention, financial literacy and student support services. He has conducted and presented research on topics including youth violence prevention, qualitative research methodologies, effective teaching, and student engagement. He has experience in research administration from Livingstone College, where he served as assistant vice president for institutional effectiveness, sponsored programs and research. He also has been a staff member at UNC-Chapel Hill.

“Perceptions of body figure Attractiveness Among African American Male College Students,” a manuscript by Dr. Tammy Webb (pictured) and co-authored by Drs. Tiffany Fuller, Regina S. Fults-McMurtery and Daniel Webb, Department of Human Performance and Leisure Studies, has been accepted for publication by the Journal of African American Studies.
