Science Festival

North Carolina Science Festival

The College of Engineering and the E-Academy at North Carolina A&T State University will host several science activities as part of the annual North Carolina Science Festival, April 10–26.more

Energy, economics seminar

The Department of Economics and the Department of Energy and Environmental Systems will hold a seminar, “Show Me the Money: Payments for Ecosystem Services,” with Dr. Evan Mercer, Friday, April 10, 1–2 p.m., in Merrick Hall, room 128. Mercer is a research economist with the USDA Forest Service. He analyzes the effects of government policies, market factors, and societal values on the production of multiple benefits from public and private forest resources.  Click here for more information.

Undergraduate Research Week

N.C. A&T will celebrate Undergraduate Research Week with three events. An energy poster competition will be Tuesday, April 14, 10 a.m.–2 p.m., in the Fort IRC Building, fourth floor lobby. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place undergraduate and graduate winners. The competition is sponsored by the Center for Energy Research and Technology.

 

The Undergraduate Research Scholars Program in the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences will host its annual seminar, featuring four undergraduate presentations, 11 a.m. until noon on Wednesday, April 15, in the C.H. Moore Agricultural Research Station, room A-16. Topics include developing student leadership, water management, lactose intolerance in African Americans and swine health issues.

 

Lastly, an Undergraduate Research Student Poster Showcase will be held at the International Civil Rights Center and Museum, 134 S. Elm Street, on Friday, April 17, 4–6 p.m. It is open to the community.

1890 quiz bowl

The 125th Anniversary of the Second Morrill Act of 1890 Committee has organized an online 1890 Knowledge Quiz Bowl for N.C. A&T students, April 17–22. Prizes are 25 gift cards worth $25 each. Remind your students to log on to http://morrill1890.ag.ncat.edu starting Friday, April 17, to learn more about the history of the 1890s and their place in America’s land-grant university system. Students will be able to access the quiz bowl by clicking on “For Students.”

Run with the law 5K

The University Police Department invites runners to register for a 5K race to benefit Special Olympics of North Carolina. The race will be Saturday, April 25, at Hagan Stone Park, 5920 Hagan Stone Park Road in Pleasant Garden. Sign-in is 8–8:30 a.m., and the race will begin at 9 a.m. Registration is $30; $15 for students with a valid Aggie OneCard. To register, click here. Registration covers admission to the race, a 2015 Special Olympics T-Shirt and a light meal.

Dog wash fund raiser

The Pre-Veterinary Medicine Club will wash dogs to raise money on Saturday, April 25, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Webb Hall. Funds will be used to operate the club and for community service work, such as food drives for animal shelters. Bath-friendly dogs and their owners are invited. The donation is $7 per dog. Local veterinarian, Dr. Michael Cotton, will provide rabies vaccinations from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., for dogs who need them. The fees are $5 for one-year shots and $10 for three-year shots.

ITSDE workshops

Instructional Technology Services and Distance Education (ITSDE) is offering a series of workshops on using Blackboard, Online Course Development and Teaching, e-Portfolios, Blackboard Collaborate, Office 365, using iPads, and other technology-related topics that are designed to help faculty and staff enhance instruction and improve productivity is being offered by Instructional Technology Services and Distance Education (ITSDE), now through May. Summer camp registration

Registration for summer camps is now open. N.C. A&T employees who register for three summer youth camps sponsored by the Office of Continuing Education at regular price through payroll deduction, receive a $25 discount to be applied toward weeks 4, 5 or 6 of camp. Have you registered?

Visit the 125th Anniversary of the Second Morrill Act Celebration website to register for the 1890 Day Wellness Walk/Run scheduled to begin at noon on Thursday, April 23. The event will feature Aggie alumnus and former NFL coach and player Dwaine “Peewee” Board and Provost/Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Joe B. Whitehead leading 1,890 Aggies in a 1.890 mile walk/run at Aggie Stadium. The cost to pre-register is $18.90 per person, $20 onsite. All proceeds to benefit a newly established Justin Morrill Scholarship. In addition, a free health fair—aimed at increasing health awareness and promoting healthy behavior through health screenings, vendor demonstrations and seminars—will be in Corbett Sports Center from noon until 3 p.m. Both events are open to the public.

Spring professional development course offerings

The spring professional development course offerings, sponsored by the Division of Human Resources - Center for Leadership and Organizational Excellence (CLOE), target four areas designed to enhance workforce development capabilities: Organizational Culture, Results Orientation, Leadership, and Compliance. Dr. Solomon Bililign

Dr. Solomon Bililign, professor of physics, attended the Atmospheric Chemistry Center for Observational Research and Data Community Workshop on In-Situ Observational Atmospheric Chemistry that convened in Boulder Colo., March 30–April 1. The primary focus of the ACCORD workshop was to identify and prioritize future activities in in situ observational atmospheric chemistry. It is also connected with National Academies’ panel on “The Future of Atmospheric Chemistry Research” that was formed to “identify priorities and strategic steps forward for atmospheric chemistry research for the next decade.” 

 

The ACCORD workshop was attended by about 100 scientists from universities, the National Center for Atmospheric Research and the National Science Foundation. N.C. A&T and Howard University were the only Minority Serving Institutions that participated in the workshop.

Dr. Sung-Jin Lee, assistant professor of housing research, Dr. Meeshay Williams-Wheeler, associate professor of child development and family studies, and Dr. Jane Walker, professor of fashion merchandising and designing, recently published a manuscript in the Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, “Assessing Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Students’ Familiarity with the FCS-BOK.” 

Dr. Elimelda Moige Ongeri

Dr. Elimelda Moige Ongeri, assistant professor in the Department of Biology, recently made two presentations at the Experimental Biology Meeting, which was in Boston March 28–April 1. The first presentation, “Hypoxia Induced Redistribution of OS-9 in Kidney Cells,” was in collaboration with two undergraduate RISE Scholars, Regine Harris and Corshe Stanley. The second, “Meprin Interactions with the Catalytic Subunit of Protein Kinase A in Ischemia Reperfusion-induced Renal Injury," was in in collaboration with a master’s level graduate biology student, Jean-Marie Niyitegeka. Both presentations were sponsored by the American Physiological Society as part of the Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology. The research is supported by an NIH/NIGMS grant.
