Public notice

As part its reaccreditation process, the University Police Department will host an on-site assessment to verify that it meets professional standards. N.C. A&T employees, students and members of the community are invited to comment at a public session Tuesday, April 7, at 2:30 p.m., in the Dudley Memorial Building, Multipurpose Room.

 

Comments also can be called in to the assessment team at 336-285-2426 on April 7, between 10 a.m. and noon. Written comments may be sent to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, 13575 Heathcote Blvd., Suite 320, Gainesville, VA 20155.

Staff Senate nominations

The Staff Senate is accepting nominations for 2015–2017, now through 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 1. Nominees will be notified and elections will be held online April 8–15. Grant writing event

The Division of Research and Economic Development will host a proposal development event, “Grant Writing for the National Science Foundation’s Directorate of Biological Sciences,” Friday, April 10, 9–10:30 a.m., in the Fort IRC Building, room 410. Two program directors for physiological and structural systems in the NSF Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO), will discuss funding priorities, sources of grant support and more. Gibbs Lecture

This year’s Gibbs Lecture will be presented Wednesday, April 1, by Dr. Hasan Kwame Jeffries, associate professor of history at The Ohio State University. Jeffries will address the topic, “The Role of the Community in the Civil Rights Movement.” The lecture will begin at 7 p.m., in Harrison Auditorium. It is free and open to the public. A reception will follow in the Dudley Memorial Building, Multipurpose Room. The Department of History, History Scholars and the Lyceum Program are sponsors of the annual lecture. Postage stamp sales

The University Mail Center will be in the lobby of Dowdy Administration Building for monthly stamp sales from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., on Thursday, April 2; Friday, May 1 and Tuesday, June 2.

HPLS symposium

The Department of Human Performance and Leisure Studies will hold its third annual symposium, “Sports/Allied Health and Wellness: A Community Conversation,” Friday, April 24, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., in Proctor Hall and the Academic Classroom Building. Keynote luncheon speaker will be Seth Bennett, senior vice president of marketing, entertainment and interactive media for the Charlotte Hornets.

Summer counselors needed

Lead counselors are needed to direct and coordinate the associate counselors and serve as student activities director for the Aggie Impact Scholars Program, June 25–Aug. 3. Associate counselors will monitor students, assist instructors, provide tutoring, supervise/lead social and academic activities, chaperone outings, and other duties as assigned.

 

The Aggie Impact Scholars Program is a summer transition program that serves selected freshmen. The program offers compensation for room and meals for six weeks.

North Carolina A&T State University is participating in The Home Depot Retool Your School Campus Improvement Grant Program that provides support for historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to fund improvement projects on their campuses (click here for details). Winning will allow N.C. A&T to expand last year’s plan designed by landscape architecture students and create an eco-friendly green space in the area between the Science Building, Sockwell Hall and Smith Hall.

1890 Day Walk/Run and Health Fair

Visit the 125th Anniversary of the Second Morrill Act Celebration website to register for the 1890 Day Wellness Walk/Run scheduled to begin at noon on Thursday, April 23. The event will feature Aggie alumnus and former NFL coach and player Dwaine “Peewee” Board and Provost/Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Joe B. Whitehead leading 1,890 Aggies in a 1.890 mile walk/run at Aggie Stadium. The cost to pre-register is $18.90 per person, $20 onsite. All proceeds to benefit a newly established Justin Morrill Scholarship. In addition, a free health fair—aimed at increasing health awareness and promoting healthy behavior through health screenings, vendor demonstrations and seminars—will be in Corbett Sports Center from noon until 3 p.m. Both events are open to the public.

Spring professional development course offerings

The spring professional development course offerings, sponsored by the Division of Human Resources - Center for Leadership and Organizational Excellence (CLOE), target four areas designed to enhance workforce development capabilities: Organizational Culture, Results Orientation, Leadership, and Compliance. Taxpayers who prepare their own returns and have income of $57,000 or less are eligible for free federal and state tax preparation and e-file software through www.myfreetaxes.com. The website is sponsored by the Walmart Foundation in cooperation with Goodwill Industries International, the National Disability Institute and the United Way, working in a partnership with the Internal Revenue Service. James Barhill

James Barnhill, assistant professor in the Department of Visual Arts and Performing Arts, recently visited with students in grades 2-5 at Madison Elementary and Erwin Montessori schools to discuss his sculpture of Rosa Parks and demonstrate the artistic process. Students in grades 4-5 also participated in drawing workshops and received sketchbooks. Barnhill sculpted the February One Monument that resides in front of the Dudley Building on campus.

Dr. Willie HookerDr. Willie Hooker, professor in the Department of Visual Arts and Performing Arts, is featured in the March/April issue of Huami Magazine, which is published quarterly by Mykel Media Company. The article highlights Hooker’s legacy as an artist and teacher. His work reflects his passion for African and African American art and history. One of his recent works is displayed at the university’s new Center for Outreach in Alzheimer’s, Aging, and Community Health (COAACH). 

Bonnie Newman Davis

Bonnie Newman Davis, associate professor in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, has received funding from a private donor to conduct research for a book about the evolution of African American women in journalism since the civil rights era of the 1960s. The book will include interviews with and portraits of black women throughout the United States who have made significant contributions to journalism in the last 50 years.

 

Newman Davis recently published the opinion column, “Safe Harbors: In the Era of Segregation, Proud, Old Communities Provided Hubs for Businesses, Churches, Schools and Culture,” in the Greensboro News & Record (March 8).

Dr. Jerono Rotich

Dr. Jerono Rotich, associate professor in the Department of Human Performance and Leisure Studies, has been selected by the UNC Board of Governors as one of 17 recipients of the its 2015 Awards for Excellence in Teaching. She will receive a commemorative bronze medallion and a $12,500 cash prize during N.C. A&T’s spring graduation ceremonies.

 

Rotich received A&T’s 2014 Community Engagement Award in recognition of her diverse efforts on behalf of immigrants and refugees. She also has an interest in studying and advancing the practice of teaching, developing a global studies course that allows A&T students to learn and work together with students in China, Senegal and India via Skype and FaceTime.

 

The UNC Board of Governors Awards for Excellence in Teaching are presented annually to one faculty member at each of the system’s 17 campuses. The recipients are nominated by committees on their home campuses and selected by the Board of Governors’ Committee on Personnel and Tenure.

Xiaohong YuanComputer science professors, Drs. Kaushik Roy, Albert Esterline and Xiaohong Yuan (pictured), have been awarded a National Science Foundation grant of $300,000 to support the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in cyber identity at N.C. A&T. The three-year grant will provide undergraduate scientists extensive research experience in cyber identity.

 

Each summer, the REU fellowship will provide nine undergraduate researchers with free room and board, funds for travel expenses, and a stipend. The NSF funded program will run from March 2015 through February 2018. Students will gain research experience engaging in projects such as establishing an identity-theory framework, exploiting WebIDs for multiple identities, applying authorship analysis, mitigating biometric-based replay attacks, identifying web clients through behavior characterization, and detecting cyber threats by matching patterns of user behavior. Students will also be exposed to a variety of seminars and panels on topics related to cyber identity.
