MEAC Honors Two Football Standouts

North Carolina A&T, a team in the midst of a heated battle for the 2014 MEAC football crown, is starting to receive contributions throughout its offense.

Two of those offensive threats received recognition from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference this week. Junior quarterback Kwashaun Quick was named MEAC Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for a career-high 249 yards and four touchdowns. He also had career highs in completions (22), pass attempts (29) and completion percentage (.759). He also had 63 yards rushing.

Freshman running back Marquell Cartwright joined Quick in the weekly honors as he was named MEAC Rookie of the Week after posting 109 all-purpose yards (62 rushing, 47 receiving) and two touchdowns.

Quick’s four touchdown passes gave him 12 for the season, making him just the second A&T quarterback in 18 years to post double-figure touchdown passes. He has thrown 47 straight passes without an interception.

“Quick is starting to develop into a pretty nice quarterback. I think since he returned the dynamics on our football team have changed because we’re getting the ball into the hands of our playmakers,” coach Rod Broadway said, referring to the three weeks Quick missed with a knee injury.

“We have some wide receivers who can play, so it’s good that they’re getting some touches now. That has been our goal all along – to get the ball in the hands of the guys that can make plays.”

Cartwright’s weekly honor gives him two for the season. He earned his first for his 135-yard, two-touchdown performance at Howard on Sept. 27. Cartwright has seven rushing touchdowns and one touchdown reception this season. He is sixth in the conference in rushing touchdowns.

“(Marquell) can play, and he has a chance to be a big-time player for us. We want to use him more because that means we don’t have to give the ball to Tarik 30, 35 times a ball game,” said Broadway referring to his All-MEAC running back Tarik Cohen.

Aggies have been named the MEAC offensive player of the week three times this season, rookie of the week three times, special teams player of the week twice, offensive lineman of the week once and defensive player of the week once.

The Aggies (8-2, 5-1 MEAC) travel to Savannah State (0-10, 0-7 MEAC) Saturday to face the Tigers at 2 p.m.
