Young Alum Lands Teaching Job in Arab Nation

While traveling abroad was one of Ebony Johnson’s dreams, she never knew her career path would land her a job in one of the most popular and fastest growing nations in the Arab world.

Johnson recently started working in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) educational system teaching fourth grade English, math and science at an all-girls school in the city of Abu Dhabi.

“I am really having a wonderful time teaching in Abu Dhabi. My 4th grade team is so supportive of my ideas and I am in an environment that I can freely express my creativity,” Johnson said. “I feel like this opportunity will take my career to new heights.”

She received the opportunity to work overseas in the UAE in Abu Dhabi through Teach Away under the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) in July. Teach Away is an international teacher recruitment company that places certified and English Second Language (ESL) teachers in positions around the world. The ADEC is recognized as a world-class education system that supports all learners in reaching their full potential to compete in the global market. Its mission is to produce world-class learners who embody a strong sense of culture and heritage and are prepared to meet global challenges.

Johnson graduated with honors from North Carolina A&T State University in May 2012 with a degree in elementary education and a minor in special education. She began her teaching career at Linley Park Elementary in Asheboro, where she taught fourth grade for two years. While there, she learned about the Teach Away opportunity through a fellow colleague.

“I love trying new things that are different from the norm.  I have always had an interest in traveling and meeting new people. This is the main reason why I wanted to teach overseas,” Johnson said.

She has a two year contract. Her career plans include moving back to the U.S. to work with  families in rural areas to help parents understand their role and impact in their child’s education.
