O’Jays to Headline N.C. A&T Alumni Homecoming Concert

For its 125th anniversary, North Carolina A&T State University is gearing up for a year of nonstop celebration that includes the 2015 installment of the Greatest Homecoming on Earth.

To celebrate “the Aggie Alumni Family Reunion,” the N.C. A&T University Foundation Inc. has tapped the legendary rhythm and blues group, The O’Jays, to headline the alumni concert at 8:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 23, at the Koury Convention Center.

Formed in Canton, Ohio, The O’Jays were at the forefront of 1970s soul music. With a string of classic songs like “Back Stabbers,” “For the Love of Money” and “Love Train,” The O’Jays, one of the most influential groups of the renowned Philly Soul sound, charted 11 Top 10 R&B singles and six Top 40 pop singles over 15 years.

The “Mighty” O’Jays have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, the Official R&B Music Hall of Fame and are also recipients of BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Veteran vocalist and Greensboro native “Shelby J.” Johnson will round out the show as the opening act. Johnson has recorded and toured internationally with her band Blackgypsy and artists such as Santana, Anthony Hamilton, Mary J. Blige and most recently Prince.

General admission tickets are $120 each with general event tables of 10 seats at $1,200. Reserved tables of 10 are available at $1,400, $2,800 and $5,000. The N.C. A&T University Foundation Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit institution. Some reserved tables will receive a charitable deduction.

Money raised will fund student scholarships at the university. A&T will celebrate homecoming with 8 days of events, Oct. 18-Oct. 25. Designated alumni and student events will include a golf tournament, the coronation of Mister and Miss A&T, a comedy show and concerts, as well as the parade and football game versus MEAC rival, Howard.
