Michael A. Brown Named Director of External Affairs at N.C. A&T

Michael A. Brown has joined North Carolina A&T State University as Director of External Affairs in the Office of the Chancellor.

He is responsible for all university legislative outreach efforts with federal and non-federal elected officials, state agencies, higher education stakeholders, alumni, and others that play a role in advancing and supporting the priorities of the university.

“I’ve been in government relations my entire career, having worked at the local state and federal levels,” Brown said. “This is a great opportunity for me to bring that experience and knowledge to higher education and serve as an advocate for A&T at all three levels that I’ve worked with in the past.”

He cited A&T’s strategic direction and reputation as key factors in coming to the university.

“A&T’s national reputation drew me here,” he said. “It’s on a par with much larger land-grant universities; it has the same level of recognition and success.

“Having met with Chancellor Martin and gained an understanding of A&T’s strategic plan, Preeminence 2020, I knew this was the perfect place for me to bring my talents.”

Brown has more than 10 years of government and community relations experience. He most recently served as senior advisor for external affairs in the Office of the Secretary at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in Washington. This position was a presidential appointment.

Brown also has served as governmental relations officer and deputy director of intergovernmental relations at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and as a special advisor in the Office of the Administrator, U.S. Small Business Administration.

Brown received his Bachelor of Science degree in economics from the University of South Carolina and Master of Public Administration degree from North Carolina Central University. He also has studied at Georgetown University. He is originally from Columbia, S.C.
