| The Theatre Arts Program at North Carolina A&T State University has been chosen from over 60 universities and colleges in the Southeast to compete at the Region IV Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.
Only eight productions were selected to compete. The festival will be held Feb. 3-7 in Albany, GA, hosted by Darton State College.
A&T’s production, titled Breath, Boom, was written by award-winning playwright Kia Corthron. It focuses on 14 years in the life of Prix, the leader of a ruthless girl gang, and on the violence and abuse she experiences as she ultimately comes to terms with her demons. The play begins when she is 16 and traces her life of brutality from a young girl to a 30-year-old woman.
After the festival, Breath, Boom will be performed at the Paul Robeson Theatre at N.C. A&T, Feb. 12-15 and 19-22. The Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances will start at 7 p.m. The Sunday matinees will start at 3 p.m.
At the regional competition, theatre majors also will compete in scene and monologue auditions for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarships. The scholarships are named for the American actress, best known as "Granny" on the TV series “The Beverly Hillbillies,” who found success in vaudeville, radio, film, television and Broadway. The Irene Ryan Foundation awards sixteen regional and two national scholarships annually.
