Desmond Lawrence

First Double All-American in Track

Senior Desmond Lawrence made Aggie history at the 2015 NCAA Division I Indoor Championships, becoming the first Aggie to earn All-American honors in outdoor and indoor track.

He achieved that status by qualifying for the championships’ 60-meter final. His qualifying time Friday night was a school-record 6.60. He was the fifth seed for the Saturday night final at the University of Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track Center. His try for a national title came up short as he ran 6.65, finishing eighth.

“Not exactly the result we wanted,” said Duane Ross, director of track and field programs. “But he comes away with his second All-American honor and the prestige of perhaps being the greatest Aggie track athlete in history. I’m extremely proud of his success, not only as an athlete, but as a man. We’re going to miss him.”

Lawrence transferred to North Carolina A&T in 2012 from East Carolina and will leave A&T with many track accolades.

In 2014, Lawrence earned All-American outdoor honors by reaching the NCAA national finals in the 100-meter dash. He was a first-team All-MEAC performer four times. He won the MEAC championship in the 100- and 400-meter relay in 2014. He also won the conference’s 60 meters two straight seasons, 2014 and 2015. He has competed in the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round three times, once as a member of the ECU 400-meter relay team and twice as an Aggie in 2013 and 2014.

In addition to all his accolades, he was also a two-year starter as a wide receiver on the Aggies football team. He earned third-team All-MEAC honors in 2014 and has led the Aggies receiving over the past two seasons, solidifying himself as one of the greatest athletes to ever play at A&T.

“I’m proud of him,” Ross said. “He competed like a champ.”
