Seven Alumni Honored on Founders’ Day

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University celebrated its annual Founders’ Day program Thursday with the presentation of the Alumni Achievement Award to seven distinguished alumni.

The honorees received the award for outstanding contributions to their professions, community and the university:

  • Sandra Hughes, ’69, College of Arts and Sciences, former longtime news anchor at WFMY-TV in Greensboro and recipient of National Association of Black Journalists’ 2014 Chuck Stone Lifetime Achievement Award;
  • Tyrone Jeffers, ’96, College of Engineering, senior executive, global supply chain, for GE Oil & Gas, responsible for over 20 global factories and some 2,000 employees for the company’s Measurement and Control unit, a $1 billion manufacturer of control valves, safety valves and gas meters;
  • Daniel D. Godfrey, Sr., ’62, School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, former dean of agriculture at N.C. A&T, member of the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame and namesake of the Godfrey Multipurpose Room in Coltrane Hall;
  • Mitchell A. Martin, ’75, School of Business and Economics, managing partner of public accounting firm Martin, Harps, Syphoe & Co. of Atlanta and founder of Global Concessions Inc., a multi-franchise concept owner and operator of airport and stand-alone restaurants;
  • Velma Speight-Buford, ’53, School of Education, a distinguished educator and academic administrator for more than 45 years at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Johns Hopkins University and other institutions; former chair of the A&T Board of Trustees and former director of alumni affairs at A&T;
  • Golden H. Bethune-Hill, ’66, School of Nursing, retired as executive vice president of Riverside Health System of Newport News and chief executive of Riverside Regional Medical Center, founder and executive director of the Free Clinic of Newport News; and
  • Sonja Hines, ’92, School of Technology, president of H&S Resources Corp. of Columbia, Maryland, which provides facility operations and maintenance services and integrated facility management services such as logistics, information technology, and energy management to government agencies and commercial clients.

Dr. William B. DeLauder, president emeritus of Delaware State University, delivered the keynote address. DeLauder is a former dean of the N.C. A&T College of Arts and Sciences. He also served as a professor and department chairman in chemistry.

Other speakers included Chancellor Harold L. Martin, Sr.; Nancy Vaughan, mayor of Greensboro; Patricia Miller Zollar, ’84, chair of the N.C. A&T Board of Trustees; Rosetta L. Clay, associate vice chancellor for alumni relations and executive director of the National Alumni Association; and Dorian Davis, president of the N.C. A&T Student Government Association.
