Students Host Fashion Show, Food Drive for Earth Day

North Carolina A&T students are utilizing the power of fashion to celebrate Earth Day and support their annual food drive. Students from the Departments of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, will host the fourth Annual Earth Day Fashion Show and Food Drive at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 21 in Harrison Auditorium.

In keeping with Earth Day principles and concepts, the fashion show will feature student-created garments made from materials that are normally discarded.  Past shows, have included garments made of newspaper, plastics, cardboard, candy wrappers, bottle caps, bubble wrap, Styrofoam, aluminum cans, grass, and tree leaves.

While the students will be showcasing their unique reused and recycled clothing items, they will also collect non-perishable food items to be donated to the Greensboro Urban Ministry. A&T students and employees with their valid Aggie One Card will receive one admission ticket in exchange for a non-perishable food item or $1. Public admission tickets are $5. The public is also urged to donate non-perishable food items at the ticket office or at the door.

“We want to be of service to the community while providing real-world, hands-on experiences for students,” said Dr. Linda Florence Callahan, founder/director of the Earth Day Fashion Show and Food Dive and professor in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. “With Guilford County being one of the most food insecure areas in the country, it is important that we all play a role in seeking solutions to this pervasive problem in  the community.” said  Dr. Linda Florence Callahan.

The show will also feature aspects of the comedy and variety show Aggie Night Live, dance performances and other creative student acts. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winning designers.

The Earth Day Fashion Show and Food Drive is sponsored by Sonoco, one of the largest diversified global packaging companies with more than 300 facilities in 34 countries and is a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index
