International Board on Global Food Security to Convene at N.C. A&T

Members of the presidentially appointed Board for International Food and Agricultural Development (BIFAD) will converge at North Carolina A&T State University, May 18-20.

The board comprised primarily of food policy advisers and specialists representing the academic community, will focus on the theme of “Collaboration: Leadership, Innovation and Sustainable Technology to Meet the Demands of Global Agriculture.” 

Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. serves on the international board. N.C. A&T has a vested interest in the global impact of sustained agriculture and its systems. Through its Agricultural Research Program, the university’s School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (SAES) conducts organized research, sponsored in part by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, that impacts citizens around the world. SAES has extensive expertise in areas such as biotechnology, agricultural and biosystems engineering, natural resources management, waste management, and food microbiology. Land-grant institutions such as A&T play a critical role in agricultural development, domestically and abroad. 

BIFAD advises the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on agriculture and higher education issues pertinent to food insecurity in developing countries.

The Outreach Session featured these discussion topics: The Role of Feed the Future in Meeting the Challenges of Food Security: Opportunities for University Faculty and Students; Internationalizing U.S. University Faculty and Students; Careers in International Agriculture; and Opportunities in International Agriculture: U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The public meeting is 8:30 a.m. – noon, Friday. The topic of discussion will be: N.C. A&T Leadership in International Agricultural Innovation and Sustainable Technology Development to Meet Demands of Global Agriculture. The open meeting will also include a question and answer period.
