President Obama Appoints Trustee to Key Advisory Board

In a White House release on May 5, President Barack Obama announced his intent to appoint North Carolina A&T State University alumna and Board of Trustee member, Janice Bryant Howroyd, to serve on the President’s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).

“As a product of an HBCU, I know the value to our society and economy from these institutions,” said Bryant Howroyd. “The privilege of working to support the collective and expanded missions of these schools is tremendous. It is an honor to bring my professional and personal expertise to this appointment.”

The role of the board is vital to the proliferation and continued funding for HBCUs. It issues an Annual Federal Plan for Assistance to Historically Black Colleges and Universities to the president on participation of HBCUs in federally-sponsored programs, provides advice to the secretary of education, and makes recommendations to the president on how to increase the private-sector role in strengthening HBCUs. The board places particular emphasis on enhancing institutional infrastructure and facilitating planning, development, and the use of new technologies to ensure the long-term viability and enhancement of these institutions.

In a statement regarding the new appointments to the board, President Obama said, “I am confident that these experienced and hardworking individuals will help us tackle the important challenges facing America, and I am grateful for their service. I look forward to working with them.”

Bryant Howroyd has risen to acclaim as being the founder and CEO of ACT-1 Group, a global organization providing total workforce solutions. The company delivers staffing services under the name of AppleOne, background checks and screenings under ACheck Global, and workforce solutions under the flagship brand of Agile-1. Act-1 Group is the largest privately-held workforce management company founded in the USA, and is minority- and woman-owned. Follow Bryant Howroyd on Twitter and Instagram @jbryanthowroyd.
