A Review of 2015-16: Our 125th Year of Excellence and Achievement

The 2015-16 academic year has included great change and growth for North Carolina A&T State University.

AUGUST
The Quasquicentennial Celebration Begins
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University will commemorate 125 years as a premier institution of higher learning, during the 2015-16 academic year. To celebrate, the university has planned a year-long series of events with the theme, Our Pride, Our Future.

A&T Welcomes More Than 2,400 New Aggies
When classes began on Wednesday, Aug. 19, approximately 1,802 freshmen and 634 transfer students joined the student body at North Carolina A&T State University.

SEPTEMBER
The Top Spot Belongs to N.C. A&T
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is the No. 1 public historically black university in the nation, according to the U.S. News & World Report's 2016 Best Colleges rankings released Sept. 9.

JSNN Selected for National Nanotechnology Site
Through the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, North Carolina A&T State University is part of a collaboration being funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to advance research, education and infrastructure in nanoscale science, engineering and technology.

OCTOBER
A&Teach Receives $1.19 Million NSF Grant
The National Science Foundation has awarded a $1.19 million grant to support the North Carolina A&Teach STEM Scholars Program, which aims to produce and support highly qualified K-12 science, technology, engineering and mathematics educators (STEM) who can effectively deliver inquiry-based instruction that is concurrently culturally relevant to students in high-need schools.

A&T School of Education Named to Top 5 Best Value in N.C.
The National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) ranked the School of Education at North Carolina A&T State University No. 4 in North Carolina as a “Best Value” college of education.

Middle College Recognized for Perfect Graduation Rate
The Middle College at North Carolina A&T State University was one of 10 Guilford County Schools recognized in October by Superintendent June Atkinson of the Public Schools of North Carolina for posting an outstanding graduation rate for the 2014-15 school year.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Middle College posted a graduation rate of 100 percent.

NOVEMBER
A&T Remains Top Producer of Engineers
For the sixth consecutive year, North Carolina A&T State University has been ranked the No. 1 producer of engineering degrees on the undergraduate level awarded to African Americans in Diverse Issues in Higher Education magazine’s Top 100 ranking.

Chancellor Martin Named to Triad’s Most Influential List
The Triad Business Journal has named North Carolina A&T State University Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. to the 2015 list of the Triad’s Most Influential People.

Aggies Clinch a Share of MEAC Title
North Carolina A&T can't quite have a "celebration" yet, but the Aggies can claim their second straight MEAC football championship after defeating Delaware State 27-6 Saturday afternoon at Aggie Stadium.

Chancellor Martin Named ‘Ebony Power 100’
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. has been named to the 2015 “EBONY Power 100” list, joining the ranks of some of the most influential African Americans in the world.

DECEMBER

Distance Learning Becomes A&T Online
In hopes of increasing enrollment and more effectively market existing online programs, North Carolina A&T State University recently launched the A&T Online portal to provide a more cohesive home for its online degree programs.

A&T Scientist Patents Aspirin-Based Cancer Treatment
A food scientist with North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has been awarded a patent for a family of novel aspirin-derived compounds that could be useful in treating or preventing colon cancer, heart disease and other disorders. The patent could mean that more patients may one day be able to receive the benefits of aspirin without incurring adverse side effects.

Aggies Win Inaugural Celebration Bowl & Black College National Championship
There was plenty of good and bad that happened to N.C. A&T during the inaugural Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl Saturday afternoon. The Aggies withstood it all in front of a national television audience on ABC to win the school’s third Historically Black College and University National Football Championship with a 41-34 victory over Southwestern Athletic Conference champion Alcorn State at the Georgia Dome.

JANUARY

Student Honored by the White House
Junior computer science major Angelica Willis was one of nine individuals from across the country honored as a White House Champion of Change on Jan. 26.

University Online IT Program Nationally Ranked
In its national ranking of the Best Online Programs released on Jan. 13, the U.S. News & World Report ranked two of North Carolina A&T State University’s online programs among the best in the nation.

FEBRUARY

AT&T Foundation Donates $250K to Middle College at N.C. A&T
In an effort to continually invest in local education, communications provider, AT&T made a $250,000 contribution to the Middle College at North Carolina A&T State University.

Middle College administrators and the School of Education at North Carolina A&T will use the funds during the 2016-17 school year to teach students how to create apps, offer more student leadership opportunities and to help fund college tours for students.

Blue and Gold Marching Machine to Perform in Mardi Gras Parade
The North Carolina A&T Blue and Gold Marching Machine will spend Tuesday, Feb. 9 performing in the famed Rex Parade and participating in Mardi Gras activities in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Marching Machine was formally invited by the organizers of the parade to participate in this year’s festivities.

Office of Facilities Helps Build Habitat for Humanity Home for Local Family
Members of North Carolina A&T State University’s Office of Facilities, other university volunteers and the local Habitat for Humanity, braved the cold air and muddy ground on Jan. 16 because they were determined to fulfill their commitment to help a local family build their home.

MARCH

A&T Partners with Elon Law for New Juris Doctorate Program
North Carolina A&T State University and Elon University School of Law announce the new Accelerated Pathway to Law School (APLS) Program partnership.
The APLS program creates an opportunity for North Carolina A&T students to earn a law degree in five and a half years – attending three years at North Carolina A&T and two and a half years at Elon Law.

Lady Aggies Basketball Takes MEAC Title; Prepares for NCAA
The N.C. A&T Women’s Basketball team won the 2016 MEAC Basketball Tournament Championship with a 65-46 win over Coppin State at the Norfolk Scope Arena on March 12. It was the Aggies third MEAC title and their first in seven years. The Aggies (19-11) will also be making their third National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament appearance.

Voters Approve Connect NC, N.C. A&T to Get New Engineering Complex
After the March 15 state primary election, North Carolina A&T State University stakeholders have a reason to celebrate. With nearly 66 percent of the vote, North Carolina voters overwhelmingly approved the $2 billion Connect NC bond. The bond will bring $90 million to the university.

APRIL

Money and Essence Magazine Ranks N.C. A&T in Top 10 Best Colleges for African Americans
North Carolina A&T State University has been ranked No. 9 in the first-ever list of “50 Best Colleges for African American Students” by the editors of MONEY and Essence Magazine.
The list places N.C. A&T among Ivy League schools, large public institutions and historically black colleges and universities.

A&T Honors Three with Legacy Award
North Carolina A&T State University honored three outstanding individuals with the first Chancellor’s Legacy Award on Saturday, April 23 during the university’s 125th Anniversary Scholarship Gala.
The formal event was a continuation of anniversary festivities, but the honor belonged to Willie Deese, Dr. Velma Speight and Dr. Edward Fort.

MAY

Biological Engineering Student Receives Fulbright Grant for Research in the Netherlands
North Carolina A&T State University senior, biological engineering student Madeline Keefer will spend nine months studying flood management in the Netherlands thanks to a Fulbright U.S. Student Programs Grant jointly sponsored by the Netherland-America Foundation.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Makes Four-Year Contribution to University
Leading health care provider, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross) has committed to making a 4-year, $1 million contribution to support North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

A&T Joins Prestigious Research Alliance
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has become the 36th and only North Carolina member of the Leadership Alliance, the premiere coalition of the nation’s top research and teaching institutions committed to diversifying the higher education pipeline into positions in academia, the public and private sectors.
