Bowling Heads Into 2016-17 Preseason Ranked

The start of North Carolina A&T’s bowling season is days away. The Aggies will start the season where they have been over the past few seasons, nationally ranked in the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA).

A&T’s preseason ranking is No. 8, which is where they finished last season. The Aggies have been ranked in 18 straight NTCA polls. The Aggies are coming off a banner season in which they won the MEAC southern division for the second straight season. Weeks later N.C. A&T Athletics received its first-ever NCAA at-large bid when the bowling team was selected to compete in the NCAA Bowling Championship Tournament in April. The Aggies finished third nationally. A&T also qualified for the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships for the second straight season, a national championship tournament they won in 2015.

A week after the NCAA tournament, the Aggies came up short in trying to repeat at the Intercollegiate Team Championships by going 2-2.

There is, however, a lot of newness associated with the program as they try to repeat and exceed past success. In the offseason, the Aggies brought in Kim Terrell-Kearney, one of the most respected head coaches and professional bowlers in the country. Four freshmen will be asked to fill the void left by two-time MEAC Bowler of the Year Emily Strombeck.

“Coming off a very strong recruiting year, our four incoming freshmen are already getting into gear,” said Terrell-Kearney. “We are preparing to not only meet, but surpass the expectations from the most recent preseason polls."

Expectations are still high for the Aggies who were picked to win the MEAC southern division again in 2016-17. Senior MacKenzie Robinson has been voted as the MEAC Preseason Bowler of the Year and the Aggies return two more veterans in Senior Kristin Shinn and junior Brianna Boze.

"I am really excited to get the season started,” said Terrell-Kearney. “We are fortunate enough to bring back three very experienced and talented players. With the success of the team over the past few seasons, they are fully aware that it takes an immeasurable amount of discipline and hard work to bring home a national championship. They have set the bar very high going forward.”
