A&T Alumna, Kim Gatling Recognized by North Carolina Lawyers Weekly

Kim Gatling ’96 was recently recognized by North Carolina Lawyers Weekly as a “2017 Leaders in Law” honoree. Each year, the publication honors attorneys licensed and practicing law in the state of North Carolina who represent the most influential individuals within the state’s legal community. She is a partner for Smith Moore Leatherwood Attorneys at Law and works in the Greensboro office where she focuses her practice on intellectual property and technology.

At an early age, Gatling’s parents instilled in her the value of education. She followed the footsteps of her father by attending North Carolina A&T State University, and she graduated with an electrical engineering degree. However, during her junior year everything changed when she met a recruiter that inspired her to use her engineering degree by pursuing a career in patent law. After graduation, she received her juris doctor degree from the George Washington University Law School.

With more than 17 years of experience as a lawyer, it is a huge honor for Gatling to be recognized in her profession. This opportunity is something she doesn’t take lightly and it motivates her to continue to be a great example for her three sons who are ages 5, 7, and 13.

“I want my boys to see that their mom is a hard-worker, I have a great career and that I love serving my community,” said Gatling. “I am truly blessed to do what I love and to give back to others.”

Gatling currently serves as the vice chair of the board of visitors for North Carolina A&T State University and the vice chair of the Gateway Research Park. She also serves on the following boards: the North Carolina A&T Real Estate Foundation, United Way of Greater Greensboro and the Cone Health Foundation.
