White, Stewart Named National Athletes of the Week

Mighty Wins 400 Meters at Duke

The national honors keep pouring in for the North Carolina A&T men’s and women’s track and field teams.

Senior Kayla White was named NCAA Division I women’s track athlete of the week by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday. On the men’s side, Trevor Stewart was named NCAA Division I track athlete of the week by the USTFCCCA.

Both Aggie track athletes turned in historic performances at the 2019 MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships last week at N.C. A&T’s Irwin Belk Track.

White ran a 10.96 to win the MEAC outdoor 100 meters for the second straight season and move to No. 1 in the nation in the event. Her time is also the fifth-fastest time ever recorded by a collegiate athlete. White’s 22.52 in the 200m over the weekend is also the fastest time in the nation. It earned her the 200m outdoor conference title for the second consecutive season. White also repeated as a member of the MEAC outdoor 4x100-meter relay championship team.

Also, for the second straight year, she was named the conference’s most outstanding athlete. During the winter, she won the indoor national championship in the women’s 200m.

Stewart ran the 14th-fastest time ever ran in the world in the 400m over the weekend with his 44.38 to win the event. Stewart is also seventh nationally in the men’s 200m at 20.27.

Both athletes will compete in the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round (regionals), May 25-28 at the University of North Florida hoping to get a chance to compete for national championships at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 5-8 at the University of Texas.
