Retool grant
North Carolina A&T State University was one of 10 Historically Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) chosen to receive a $10,000 grant from Home Depot’s Retool Your School contest. The grant will be used to fund eco-friendly projects around the campus.
Representatives from Home Depot were on campus during the A&T vs. North Carolina Central University game to present the check. Home Depot also distributed “mystery” gift cards to game attendees.
Fifty-six black colleges and universities competed in the campus improvement grant program. One school was selected to receive a $50,000 grant.
Temporary hours
Beginning Monday, Dec. 12, the University Ticket Office in Brown Hall will be open 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Normal hours, 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m., will resume Monday, Jan. 2, 2012.
A Staff forum
The University Staff Senate will host its Fall Forum, “What’s Going On,” Monday, Dec. 12, in Stallings Ballroom, 11 a.m.–2 p.m. All SPA and EPA non-teaching employees are encouraged to attend. Lunch will be served.
Healthy campus
Sodexo and Auxiliary Services invite you to attend the Insights on Innovation Luncheon Series, Health and Wellness: Creating Healthy Environments on Campus, with Olympic Gold Medalist Shannon Miller, who will focus on healthy eating, physical activity, stress relief and how to make the college experience a foundation for good health. Aggies WoWW
Start the New Year off right by attending the hour-long Aggies WoWW (Aggies Working our Way to Wellness) interest meeting that begins at noon on Thursday, Dec. 15, in the Campus Recreation Center. Join Aggies the WoWW employee program to learn ways to get healthier, eat smarter and lose weight. This program is designed for and open to all A&T faculty and staff. Winter holiday
North Carolina A&T State University will be closed Dec. 26-30. The university will observe the 2011 Veterans Day holiday Wednesday, Dec. 28, and New Year’s Day will be observed Friday, Dec. 30. The university will reopen for normal business Monday, Jan. 2, 2012.
Eight hours should be charged to compensatory time, vacation or bonus leave for Thursday, Dec. 29. Employees should indicate these hours via Web Time Entry or Leave Reporting in Banner Self Service.

Coming soon
The Division of Information Technology will be delivering new and improved email service to the campus in the near future.
DoIT is in the process of upgrading the campus email platform to IBM Lotus Notes 8.5.x. This upgrade provides a richer email system with new and enhanced features.
With the roll out of the new version of Lotus Notes, DoIT is establishing a standard email platform for the university. The launch will mark significant improvements in the email experience and how workflow is managed in the future. For a list of FAQs regarding the Lotus Notes upgrade, visit DoIT online.
Program rescheduled
Due to a conflict with the Honors Convocation, the March 15, 2012, Closing Bell Series presentation featuring Eric Watson of Delhaize America will be held during the 2012-2013 academic year. Watson will discuss the importance of developing effective networks and mentoring relationships.
Sheila J. Allen, special project coordinator for the Division of Information Technology, was inducted into Epsilon Pi Tau, The International Honor Society for Professions in Technology, as a member-at-large on Nov. 10, in Cleveland, Ohio, where she also received the Alvin Rudisill-Epsilon Pi Tau Scholarship for the Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE) on Nov. 11.
Epsilon Pi Tau recognizes and advances the professional work of practitioners in the technology professions. The organization has provided honor and distinction to members, institutions, programs, and individuals throughout the world for 80 years.
“FIGURE: The Art of James Barnhill” is on exhibit at the African American Atelier in the Greensboro Cultural Center through Friday, Dec. 16. Dr. Barnhill is an associate professor in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. The exhibit includes busts from his February One Monument, a sculpture of civil rights icon Rosa Parks, and other pieces.
Dr. Luba Kurkalova , associate professor in the Department of Economics, has received a Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST) Certificate of Excellence for her contributions in the creation of outstanding educational materials, “Carbon Sequestration and Greenhouse Gas Fluxes in Agriculture: Challenges and Opportunities.
Dr. Ewuukgem Lomo-David (left), associate professor in the Department of Business Education, and Dr. Betty F. Chapman (center), assistant professor in the Department of Business Administration, have co-authored and published an article with Ali Acilar of Bilecik University in Turkey and Li-Jen Shannon of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. “University Students’ Computer Security Practices in Two Developing Nations: A Comparative Analysis” is published in the special issue of the Business Studies Journal (2011).
In unrelated news, Lomo-David co-authored “Analysis of Academic Integrity Policies in a University System” with Dr. Sherrie D. Cannoy (right), assistant professor of business education, and presented the paper at the Information Systems Education Conference, Nov. 3-5. He also has been nominated to serve on the 2012 Scientific Committee of Technology Innovation and Industrial Management Conference organized by business faculty at the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University Institute of Management in Lublin, Poland, and business and engineering faculty at Kasetsart University in Bangkok, Thailand.
Dr. Dawn Forbes Murphy has been named director of Summer Sessions and Certificate Programs for the Office of University Outreach, Professional Development and Distance Education. Murphy has more than 11 years experience delivering quality student support services. She specializes in grant writing, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) compliance monitoring and review, working with faculty and staff across disciplines in collaborative efforts to improve student retention, academic advising and training, policy development, and implementing innovative retention strategies to foster student success.
In other positions at N.C. A&T, Murphy has served as the program manager for the North Carolina Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (NC-LSAMP) and director of student services for the School of Nursing. She holds a bachelor’s degree in professional English, a master’s degree in counseling and a doctorate in educational leadership.
Robert Pompey Jr. has been named interim vice chancellor for the Division of University Advancement, effective Dec. 5. While serving in this interim capacity, Pompey will continue his role as vice chancellor for the Division of Business and Finance.
The former vice chancellor for university advancement, Dr. Mark Kiel, retired Dec. 2. A national search has been launched for a permanent replacement.
Dr. Teresa Jo Styles, professor of journalism and mass communication, spoke in November at the National Library of Ireland in Dublin on the subject of “Writing Press History.” Contributions on press and journalism history came from scholars and journalists located in Ireland, Britain, Spain, France, Germany, Italy and the United States. The fourth annual conference of the Newspaper and Periodical History Forum of Ireland critically examined the relationship between writing about the press and national and transnational histories.
