SOCIETY TO HOST RESEARCH DAY

AAF Auction
The Aggie Athletic Foundation will host a fundraiser to benefit the Department of Athletics Saturday, Sept. 17, 6 p.m.–9 p.m. (doors open at 5 p.m.) at the Sheraton Four Seasons, Guilford Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.
An assortment of items will be auctioned such as unframed art valued at $400 from the Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau, NFL Panthers vs. Redskins tickets (35-yard line), Carolina Hurricane hockey tickets, autographed sneakers from Raymond Felton (current NBA Portland Trail Blazer and former UNC Tarheel), wine tasting package for a party of 20 valued at $500), electronic items, and much more.

Constitution Day program
The Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice will convene a program to commemorate Constitution Day (Sept. 17) on Monday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m. The topic is “The Battle for Gender Equality in Athletics: Does Title IX Violate the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment?”
The program will be held in the General Classroom Building, room A218, and will be led by Constitutional Scholar Derick Smith. For more information call (336) 285-2046.
Blood drive
Sebastian Health Center, Red Cross Club and C.W. Lawrence Masonic Lodge #837 are sponsoring a blood drive Wednesday, Sept. 21, 11 a.m.–3:30 p.m. in the Memorial Student Union Exhibit Hall. Contact Janet Lattimore, (336) 334-7880, to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome.
Research proposal seminar
The Office of Outreach and Technology Transfer is hosting a seminar titled, Improving the Quality of Your Research Proposal Using Patent Databases, on Wednesday, September 21, 12 noon–1:30 p.m. in the Fort IRC Building, room 410. Laura Collins, registered patent agent will be the speaker. The seminar will help you improve your proposal scores, craft a focused patent search, quickly evaluate patent search results and use patent searches to identify current commercial and academic research landscape. Honor wall

Dance workshop
A workshop featuring foxtrot, salsa and swing dancing will be held Saturday, Oct. 1, in the Fitness Center, 9:15 a.m.–2 p.m. Honors Program Director Michael Cundall and his wife Amy, both accomplished dancers, will conduct the sessions.

Coronation’s new night

Antoine Alston (left) professor of agriscience education, Chastity Warren English (center) assistant professor of agriscience, and Anthony Graham (right) associate professor and chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, have co-authored a peer-reviewed article. “Secondary agricultural educators: How prepared are they to provide an all inclusive learning environment” appears in the Journal of Southern Agricultural Education Research, 60 (1). The trio also co-authored the peer-reviewed article, “A perceptual analysis of the benefits and barriers to creating all inclusive learning environments in secondary agricultural education programst,” that appears in the Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development.
Linda Florence Callahan, professor in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, moderated a panel, “Mainstream Media Coverage of the Islamic Community: 10 Years after 911,” at the 94th Annual Conference of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Callahan also was recognized for serving as chair of the AEJMC Commission on the Status of Minorities and serving on the AEJMC Board of Directors for the past two years. The conference was held in St. Louis, Mo., Aug. 10-13.
Conchita Ndege, professor in the Department of History, has been appointed vice president of the Museum of Anthropology Advisory Board at Wake Forest University. Ndege will represent the Winston-Salem Returned Peace Corps Group at the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps in Washington, D.C., this month by doing advocacy work at Congress, volunteer work in the community, and attending celebrations and lectures related to the work of the Peace Corps.
As a former Peace Corps Volunteer, she will participate in an exhibition of artifacts from countries served and co-sponsored by the Winston-Salem Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Group and the Museum of Anthropology, Wake Forest University, Sept. 20–Dec. 5. A film in which she is featured can be at the exhibit.
Brandis Phillips, assistant professor in the Department of Accounting, and Belinda Shipps (pictured), assistant professor in the Department of Management, presented the research paper “Frequency of Usage: The Impact of Technology Acceptance Factors versus Social Factors” at the Americas Conference on Information Systems in Detroit, Mich., Aug. 5. Phillips also presented a paper, “Managing Uncertainty with IT Portfolio Management,” at the Academy of Management Conference, in San Antonio, Texas, Aug. 16.
Schenita Davis Randolph, clinical associate professor and certified nurse educator in the School of Nursing, presented a poster at the 19th Biennial Conference of International Society for Sexually Transmitted Diseases Research in Quebec City, Canada. The research, “Exploring Sexual Identity Development of African American Male College Students,” was funded by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities of the National Institute of Health. Randolph also gave an oral presentation on this research at the 2011 National HIV Prevention Conference in Atlanta, Ga.
Judy Rashid’s review of Unearthing Promise and Potential: Our Nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities, by Gasman, Lundy-Wagner, Ransom, and Bowman III, has been published in the Review of Higher Education (Summer 2011, Vol. 34, No. 4), the official journal of the Association for the Study of Higher Education. Rashid, dean of students, noted that while the book is an ambitious attempt to examine the historical inception of HBCUs in the United States and their present role in higher education, the book also fosters a need to further examine the varied perspectives, significant purposes, challenges and outstanding contributions of this unique family of higher education institutions.
Ranked in 2010 and 2011, among universities in the United States and Europe, as one of the top programs for preparing students for careers in professional sales, the School of Business and Economics has received a $20,000 grant from 3M to participate in the 2011 Sales for Social Impact (SSI) Challenge. Jakki Williams, associate professor of marketing, will serve as the faculty sponsor and supervise business students as they learn to apply business principles in a social context. The business students will collaborate with students in engineering to develop a sales plan focusing on getting a water purification product in the hands of needy Haitians. Other Universities participating in the 2011 SSI Challenge include Baylor, DePaul, Indiana, Houston, St. Catherine’s, Tuskegee, and Xavier University of Louisiana.
N.C. A&T received 18 grants totaling $4.93 million in August. One highlight of last month’s funding was a grant worth $198,482 from the National Science Foundation to Zhijun Zhan of the Department of Computer Science. The co-investigator on the project will be Noshir Contractor, a distinguished professor at Northwestern University.
