Pre-Memorial Day 2013 tributes
The Office of Veteran and Disability Support Services will pay tribute to loved ones lost through service in the U.S. Armed Forces. To commemorate your loved one(s) at the Annual Pre-Memorial Day Ceremony (Thursday, May 2, 11:30 a.m., Memorial Student Union Monument), submit their name(s) during the week of April 15– 19, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., at the Office of Veteran and Disability Support Services, Murphy Hall, Suite 01. NSF CAREER proposal writing
The Office of Research Services and Project Management will host a webinar, “How to Write a Competitive NSF CAREER Proposal,” for assistant professors in the STEM disciplines. The webinar will be held Thursday, April 18, in the Fort IRC Building, room 410, 2–4 p.m. Registration is not required.
The speaker will be Lucy Deckard, president of Academic Research Funding Strategies, a research-funding consulting firm. The session will cover how to decide when and if to apply for a CAREER grant; how to position yourself and your research to be competitive for a CAREER; how to structure your proposal; how to develop an educational plan; keys to success and common mistakes to avoid; a step-by-step discussion of each section of the proposal and what it needs to tell the reviewers; how to analyze reviews and decide whether to revise and resubmit; and questions and answers. Additional materials, including example proposal sections, proposal outlines and helpful resources, will be included.

Another NSF proposal workshop
Are you interested in learning how to prepare a highly competitive NSF (National Science Foundation) grant proposal? Would you like advice from experts in obtaining NSF funding? If so, plan to attend the Building the NSF Grant Proposal Workshop hosted by the Division of Research and Economic Development.
The workshop will be held Thursday, April 25, 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m., in room 108 of the Academic Classroom Building. Dr. Robert Porter, director of research development for the University of Tennessee, and Dr. Earnestine Psalmonds Easter, program director in NSF’s Division of Graduate Education, will provide information on writing successful proposals for NS programs, particularly concentrating on those that are relevant for N.C. A&T faculty.

Extended learning
Did you know that the Office of Extended Learning, which includes Summer School, Continuing Education and Professional Development, and Distance Learning, offers a wide array of programs, courses and special events that may interest you? For example, there are courses that may meet your degree requirements during the summer, online courses during summer and the regular semesters, summer camps and enrichment opportunities for children, professional development workshops for working adults, and other training opportunities. In addition, the office provides conference and meeting planning services for university employees as well as external partners including online registration and fee payment and processing. Bonnie Newman Davis, the Greensboro News & Record, Janice Bryant Howroyd Endowed Professor of Journalism, has written articles and commentaries for several publications in recent months that include the News & Record and thegrio.com. Davis’ commentary for the News & Record reflects on what it is like to return to her hometown after 32 years. Her commentaries for thegrio.com, an MSNBC online news site, focus on United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice and Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg. In addition to teaching and writing, Davis helps student hone their writing, editing and visual journalism skills for the JOMC Journal, an online news site created in 2011 within the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Dr. Kimberly McNeil, interim associate dean of the School of Business and Economics, and her colleagues Drs. Scott Neslin, Gail Ayala Taylor and Kimberly Grantham, published an article, "Overcoming the 'recency trap' in customer relationship management," in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Volume 41, Issue 3 (2013), 320-337.
Jacqueline Y. Powers, assistant director of new student orientation in the Office of New Student Programs, received the National Orientation Directors Association (NODA) Region Six Outstanding New Professional Award at the 2013 Southern Regional Orientation Workshop in Memphis, Tenn., on March 17. This award recognizes a new (2-4 years) orientation, retention and transition professional who has demonstrated service to NODA and/or to the orientation, retention and transition profession.

Dr. Syrulwa Somah, associate professor and graduate studies coordinator in the Department of Built Environment, spent Jan. 7–25 at W.V.S. Tubman University in Harper, Maryland County, Liberia, to lay the foundation for international projects between TU and N.C. A&T. The projects include (but are not be limited to) a study abroad program, faculty and staff exchanges, and the development of an environmental health and safety curriculum.

Dr. Pauline Ada Uwakweh, assistant professor in the Department of English, presented a paper, “Power, Powerlessness, and Social (In)Justice in Tsitsi Dangarembga’s The Book of Not,” at the 39th Annual African Literature Association Conference in Charleston, S.C., March 20–25. In the paper, Uwakweh argues that in The Book of Not, which explores race and power dynamics in colonial Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), Dangarembga appropriates “storytelling” as a technique for exposing the various facets of social injustice.
Another of Uwakweh’s papers, “(Re)Constructing Masculinity and Femininity in African War Narratives: The Youth in Chimamanda Adichie’s “Half of a Yellow Sun” and Gorretti Kyomuhendo’s “Waiting: A Novel of Uganda at War,”was published in the Journal of the African Literature Association (JALA), vol. 7(1), Summer/Fall 2012. This paper was presented at the 38th ALA Conference in Dallas, Texas, last year.
