The Text-in-Community Committee is soliciting recommendations for the 2013–14 text-in-community book. Submit your suggestions to Dr. Beverly Grier, committee chair, at bcgrier@ncat.edu by the close of business Friday, March 15. The committee encourages recommendations on the following topics: Climate Change/The Environment
Health/Health Disparities, including Global Health and African American Health; Global Affairs; African-American Studies; and Fiction. In keeping with the way “millennium” students access information, all book recommendations should be available as an eBook.

Critical thinking institutes

The Office of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is sponsoring four critical thinking institutes for faculty and students Friday, March 15, and Friday March 22. Murphy Hall elevator—temporarily out of service

The elevator in Murphy Hall is out of service until the week of April 2. Installed in 1976, the elevator is being updated to meet current ADA code standards. Because there is only one elevator in Murphy Hall, students, faculty, staff and visitors must use the stairs. Individuals with a disability should contact the Office of Veteran and Disability Support Services on the first floor for assistance. For more information, contact Facilities at 336-285-4528.

Faculty workshop on leading students abroad

The Office of International Programs will host a faculty workshop on leading students abroad Wednesday, March 27, 2–4 p.m., in room 215 of the Academic Classroom Building. If you are thinking about leading a group of students abroad, or if you are a veteran taking yet another group of students abroad, plan to attend this workshop.

The workshop facilitators will review the following:

  • Procedures for proposing and planning a study abroad program
  • Role of the faculty leader
  • Role of the Office of International Programs and other units involved
  • Health and safety
  • Emergency procedure
  • Standards in study abroad
  • Much more!

    NSF CREST spring seminar

    Dr. Robert Brown of Iowa State University will speak on “Thermochemical Processing of Biomass” at the spring seminar presented by the NSF CREST Bioenergy Center. The seminar will take place Thursday, March 28, 11 a.m., in the Science Building, room 200.

     

    Thermochemical processing uses heat and catalysts to transform biomass to fuels and biobased chemicals. Thermochemical processing includes gasification, pyrolysis and solvolysis, each of which has its advantages and challenges. Brown’s talk will provide an overview of these processing options along with the results of recent studies at ISU.

     

    Brown is Anson Marston Distinguished Professor of Engineering and Gary and Donna Hoover Chair in Mechanical Engineering at ISU. He is the director of ISU’s Bioeconomy Institute and the Center for Sustainable Environmental Technologies. His research focuses on the thermochemical processing of biomass and fossil fuels into energy, fuels and chemicals.

    New clinical medical assistant training course

    A new course has been added to the Healthcare Certification Training series sponsored by the Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development (OCEPD) at North Carolina A&T State University. The Clinical Medical Assistant Program will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 19–June 20, 6–9:30 p.m.

     

    The course will prepare students to assist the physician in multiple healthcare settings. Medical assistants with a clinical background can assist with medication administration, EKG electrocardiograms, collecting specimens for lab testing, educating patients and other related tasks. Job opportunities are prevalent with physician’s offices, clinics, chiropractor’s offices, hospitals and outpatient facilities.

     

    Students who complete the comprehensive course would be prepared to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national certification examination.

     

    Other courses in the series include the following: EKG Technician Training, Mondays and Wednesdays March 18–May 6; Medical Billing and Coding, Mondays and Wednesdays March 18–June 10; Pharmacy Technician Program, Tuesdays and Thursdays March 19–May 7; Phlebotomy Technician Program, Tuesdays and Thursdays March 19–May 28. The time for all courses is 6–9:30 p.m.

     

    Continuing Education Units (CEU), a nationally recognized standard of measure for non-credit learning activities, will be awarded for successful course completion.     Dean Craig’s retirement celebration

    Next month, Dr. Quiester Craig, dean of the School of Business and Economics, will retire after 40 years of service to N.C. A&T. Several events will be held to honor his accomplishments, April 17–19. Mark your calendars and plan to attend one or more of the following events: Wednesday, April 17, School of Business and Economics Students, Faculty and Staff Luncheon; Thursday, April 18, University Floating Reception; and Friday, April 19, Scholarship Banquet.     IT showcase

    North Carolina A&T State University’s 2013 Instructional Technology Showcase will occur Tuesday, April 16, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. The purpose of the event is to expose our students, faculty and staff to products/services that may enhance the teaching and learning experience at N.C. A&T. Technology vendors will provide demonstrations, exhibits and information on how various technologies can help us increase student success at A&T.

    A&T faculty are invited to deliver 20 to 30-minute presentations that demonstrate how technology is being used in classes to enhance teaching and learning. Topics should reflect current and future trends in Higher Education technologies. Presentation proposals are due by Friday, March 22. Click here to submit a proposal.

    Russian National Ballet Theatre

    Join N.C. A&T for the Lyceum Series presentation of the world renowned Russian National Ballet Theatre, Tuesday, April 23, 7:30 p.m., at the Carolina Theatre in downtown Greensboro. Tickets can be purchased at the A&T Ticket Office: free for students with an A&T ID, $5 for faculty and staff with A&T ID, and $20 general admission.     Netta Cox

    Netta Cox, assistant professor and head of serials at F.D. Bluford Library, has been appointed by the Guilford County Board of Commissioners to the Greensboro Public Library Board of Trustees. The board acts in an advisory and policy capacity to the Greensboro City Council on library issues that affect the city and its residents. Cox’s term expires Dec. 31, 2015.

    Dr. Quiester Craig

    Dr. Quiester Craig, dean of the School of Business and Economics, has been selected as the 2013 recipient of the Beta Alpha Psi Outstanding Dean Award. Craig was chosen based on his longstanding commitment to the honors organization for financial information professionals, his significant financial and operational support to N.C. A&T’s chapter as well as support for the faculty advisor to work with students to achieve their goals and objectives. The award will be presented at the organization’s annual meeting, Friday, Aug. 9, in Anaheim, Calif.

    Dr. Sarita D. Jackson, assistant professor in the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice, presented her research on small states and bargaining in the WTO and the link between free trade rules and industry competitiveness at Palm Beach Atlantic University, Feb. 18–20. Jackson shared her expertise with students and faculty of international relations, Latin American politics and international business, and resulted in an invitation for her to return next year.

    Dr. Tracie O. Lewis

    Dr. Tracie O. Lewis, coordinator for distance learning, has been selected to the 2013 class of the Leading Change Institute sponsored by Educause and the Council on Library Information Resources (CLIR). Educause is a nonprofit association and foremost community of IT leaders and professionals committed to advancing higher education. The Leading Change Institute, successor to the Frye Leadership Institute, engages leaders who seek to further develop their skills for the benefit of higher education. The former explores higher education challenges, empowering librarians and information technologists to initiate conversations and take action on issues of importance not just to their individual institutions, but to the entire higher education community. Leading Change Institute will convene June 2–7 in Washington, D.C.
