North Carolina A&T is a finalist in The Home Depot’s 2013 Retool Your School campus improvement grant program. Finalists are competing for $225,000 in grants for on-campus improvements and are now asking their communities and the public to help them win. From now until Monday, April 15, all Aggies and supporters are asked to visit www.retoolyourschool.com to vote for A&T. One $50,000 Tier 1 major grant, 12 Tier 2 $10,000 minor grants and one $25,000 Campus Pride grant will be awarded. The Home Depot® will announce the winners Friday, May 3.

VOTE again!

This is the first year N.C. A&T is participating in a national recycling competition called “Recycle Mania” to increase awareness of campus recycling and waste reduction! Aggies are competing against 600 colleges and universities. All participating schools are required to report measurements (pounds of recycled materials divided by campus population) weekly. The fun began Feb. 3 and ends Sunday, March 31. Follow A&T on recyclemaniacs.org.

Reminder: Honors Convocation

The Students Honors Convocation will be held Wednesday, April 10, at 10 a. m. in Harrison Auditorium. The guest speaker will be Olympic medalist Cullen Jones. Faculty and staff, please attend and encourage your students to attend.

Aggie Enrichment Camps

Register now for the summer Aggie Enrichment Camps. A wide variety of academic and enrichment programs is offered for children ages 6 to 13. This year’s camp dates begin Monday, June 17, and end Friday, Aug. 2. A&T employee payroll deduction is available through the Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development. Golf tournament

The Physical Plant Employee Organization will host its 25th Annual Douglas M. Boone Invitational Golf Tournament & Scholarship Fundraiser, Saturday, April 13, at the Crooker Tree Golf Course, 7665 Caber Road, Brown Summit, N.C. Retirement celebration

After 40 years of service to N.C. A&T, Dr. Quiester Craig, dean of the School of Business and Economics, is retiring. Several events have been scheduled to honor his tenure and accomplishments, April 17–19. Mark your calendars and plan to attend one or more of the following events: Wednesday, April 17, School of Business and Economics Students, Faculty and Staff Luncheon; Thursday, April 18, University Floating Reception; and Friday, April 19, Scholarship Banquet. Services to public schools

The School of Education is preparing N.C. A&T’s 2012–2013 School Services Report. All A&T faculty and staff are encouraged to submit their school services provided May 15, 2012, through May 14 of this year.

 

For an activity to qualify as a school service, it must meet the following criteria: the service must provide a skill, resource or support activity; service may be a single event or a series of events for service that directly/indirectly benefit B-12 (birth through 12th grade) students, teachers, parents or administrators; the service must be related to public school support; and the service must be provided by A&T faculty or staff.

Examples of activities that qualify as school services include, but are not limited to volunteering in a classroom; coaching a team; judging science fair projects; facilitating workshops for teachers; mentoring students, teachers, administrators; and recruiting students.

Russian National Ballet Theatre

The N.C. A&T Lyceum Series presentation of the world renowned Russian National Ballet Theatre is Tuesday, April 23, 7:30 p.m., at the Carolina Theatre in downtown Greensboro. Tickets can be purchased at the A&T Ticket Office: free for students with an A&T ID, $5 for faculty and staff with A&T ID, and $20 general admission. Dr. Mark Burkey

Dr. Mark Burkey, professor of economics in the School of Business and Economics, along with colleagues, H.A. Eiselt and Joy Bhadury, published an article, "An optimization-based framework for modeling counter-terrorism strategies," in OR Insight 26, 7-31 (April 2013).

 

 

 

The North Carolina Chapter of the Society of Research Administrators International has elected Nora Shively as president-elect, effective March 13. The president-elect serves a one-year term before moving on as president and past president, both of which are also one year terms. Shively is the senior research development officer for the Division of Research and Economic Development, Office of Research Services.

N.C. A&T Aggies men’s basketball team

AGGIE MEN NAB MEAC CHAMPIONSHIP
AND NCAA FIRST ROUND WIN

 

For the first time in 18 years, the N.C. A&T Aggies men’s basketball team was invited to compete in the NCAA Basketball tournament–The Big Dance–after defeating the Morgan State University Bears, 57-54, to win the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference basketball tournament. This is A&T’s 16th MEAC title, the most in conference history. In their 73-72 victory over the Liberty University Flames, the North Carolina A&T State University men’s basketball team snapped the longest losing streak in NCAA tournament history. The MEAC win was Cy Alexander’s sixth MEAC title as a head coach and his first with A&T; the NCAA tournament win was his first.
