The new semester is off and running and a preliminary report given at the chancellor’s forum for faculty and administrators indicates North Carolina A&T State University has grown its enrollment to 10,734 students, up from 10,561 last fall.

Retirement program meetings
For the last few months, you’ve been hearing about some important changes to the UNC retirement programs. To help you understand the impact of the program changes, there will be several opportunities for you to meet with investment advisors either in a group setting or one-on-one.
CAPTRUST, TIAA-CREF and Fidelity will host in-person group meetings on all campuses this fall. You will be able to ask questions and learn more about the changes. The number of on-campus appointments is limited, so be sure to sign up early.
Meetings will be at North Carolina A&T State University on the following dates and times: Sept. 29 and Sept. 30 at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., Oct.1 at 9 a.m. and Oct. 2 at 2 p.m.
If you currently participate in the ORP and hold investments with VALIC and/or Lincoln Financial Group, you have until the end of the year to change your investment election for future retirement plan contributions and to reallocate your existing account balances to either TIAA-CREF or Fidelity. Your contributions to VALIC and Lincoln Financial Group funds may continue through December 2014.

Transfer open house
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will host a Transfer Student Open House, Saturday, Oct. 11, 8 a.m.–noon, at the Alumni-Foundation Event Center. The event provides prospective transfer students the opportunity to discuss transfer admissions requirements and financial aid as well as tour the campus and visit with academic departments.
In addition, there will be a student resource fair featuring representatives from the academic departments and student services areas. For more information, visit the Undergraduate Admissions Special Events tab online.
Flu shot clinic
For your convenience, North Carolina A&T State University is again partnering with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) and Maxim Health Systems to host an on-site flu shot clinic, Tuesday, Oct. 30, 9 a.m.–3 p.m., at the 1020 East Wendover facility in room 007. The clinic is free of charge to all employees who are enrolled in the State Health Plan and their covered dependents, ages 4 and older. Children under age 4 must receive shots from their primary care physician. Participants are required to bring their BCBSNC identification card and a photo ID to the clinic, and they must sign a consent form before receiving a flu shot. To register for this free clinic, send an email to Benefits@ncat.edu to sign up. Appointments are available in 15-minute increments. Someone from the Benefits Office will confirm the appointment via email.
2015 Human Rights Medal
North Carolina A&T State University is accepting nominations for the 2015 Human Rights Medal through 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7. The award was established to recognize people who have worked to correct social injustices and who have contributed to the betterment of the world, and it is given in honor of the extraordinary action against social injustice by four N.C. A&T freshmen—Ezell Blair Jr. (Jibreel Khazan), Franklin Eugene McCain, Joseph Alfred McNeil and David Richmond Jr.—on Feb. 1, 1960.
Candidates are selected from nominations submitted to the University Awards Committee. The medal is presented to an individual who has had a positive impact on correcting social injustices and other humanitarian activities that include human welfare and social reform, acts of heroism, promotion of fellowship, dedication to technological discovery, academic advancements or contributions, diplomatic endeavors and community contributions.
Anyone can nominate a potential honoree. The winner will be notified in December and will be invited to accept the award at the Sit-In Anniversary Breakfast on Friday, Jan. 30, 2015. The honoree(s) must be able to accept the award in person and agree to give a lecture at a mutually agreed upon campus event. Diabetes Awareness Walk

Pre-health career recruitment sessions
The Pre-Professional Scholars Program, in collaboration with the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students, will host five hour-long pre-health career recruitment sessions at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, 15 and 29, and Nov. 5 and 19, in Hines Hall, room 100.
Representatives from programs such as the University of North Carolina, Virginia Common Wealth University East Carolina University Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine and Life University College of Chiropractic Studies will provide information on their respective programs.

Dr. Dawn Forbes Murphy, director of summer sessions and early/middle college liaison, has been appointed president elect for the North Carolina Association of Summer Sessions (NCASS). Established in 1964, NCASS is an association of members from public and private institutions within the state. The organization serves as a means of sharing information and ideas about educational program development for summer school.
“Show Me the Money!” – Analyzing the Potential State Tax Implications of Paying Student-Athletes,
an article by Dr. Kathryn Kisska-Schulze (with Adam Epstein of Central Michigan University), has been accepted for publication in the University of Virginia’s Virginia Sports and Entertainment Law Journal (Va. Sports & Ent. L.J.). Kisska-Schulze is an assistant professor in the School of Business and Economics, Department of Management. As of Sept. 12, the article has earned seven separate SSRN (Social Science Research Network) Top Ten Download rankings.
Drs. Bessie Nkonge, Division of Information Technology, and Sharon Hunter, School of Education, presented a paper, “Begin with the Learner in Mind: Strategies for Transforming a Face-to-Face Course for Online Delivery,”at the International Conference on Education and New Learning Technologies (EDULEARN14) in Barcelona, Spain, July 7–9.
Dr. Sanjiv Sarin, professor and dean of The Graduate School and vice provost for research, graduate programs and extended learning, has been elected president of the North Carolina Conference of Graduate Schools (NCCGS). The organization includes 22 institutions in North Carolina that award more than 800 master’s, doctoral and first professional degree programs in a wide variety of fields. These programs enroll more than 56,000 students and award more than 15,000 degrees annually. NCCGS focuses on matters of common interest relating to graduate study and research, articulates the needs of graduate education, and influences public opinion for improving and advancing graduate education in North Carolina.
Sarin is a senior member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and a registered professional engineer in North Carolina.
Martinique “Nikki” Williams has been appointed interim director of the purchasing department. The university will launch a search for a permanent director of purchasing.
Williams has served as assistant director of purchasing for nine years. Prior to coming to N.C. A&T, Williams was a global procurement manager for American Express Inc. She has over 30 years experience in the procurement services industry. Williams received her B.S. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
