Sanchez to Speak at King Celebration

Poet, educator and activist Dr. Sonia Sanchez will deliver the keynote address at the 2015 MLK celebration Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Aycock Auditorium on the campus of UNCG. The event is sponsored jointly by N.C. A&T and UNCG.more

PSM designation

The Professional Science Master’s (PSM) program in industrial biosciences at N.C. A&T has been accepted by the PSM National Office for PSM Affiliation. As of Jan. 6, there are 322 PSM programs at 152 universities across the country.

 

The Professional Science Master’s is “an innovative, new graduate degree designed to allow students to pursue advanced training in science or mathematics, while simultaneously developing workplace skills highly valued by employers. PSM programs consist of two years of academic training in an emerging or interdisciplinary area, along with a professional component that may include internships and “cross-training” in workplace skills, such as business, communications, and regulatory affairs. All have been developed in concert with employers and are designed to dovetail into present and future professional career opportunities.”

Moore Gym parking lot

The Moore Gym parking lot is now closed to accommodate construction of the Aggie Dome food court. Faculty and staff with reserved spaces have been relocated to the Laurel Street parking lot. 

 

General parking is available in surrounding campus lots and park-and-ride locations at War Memorial Stadium and Bryan Fitness Center. Contact Parking and Transportation Services, 336-285-2027, for additional information or questions.

Aggies Abroad

From Monday, Jan. 19, through Thursday, April 16, the Office of International Programs will conduct Aggies Abroad advising sessions for students planning to study abroad. The 50-minute sessions will cover study abroad programs, eligibility, financial aid, scholarships, credit transfer, the application process and the Global Studies Certificate. Dr. William Harvey

Dr. William Harvey, professor in the Department of Leadership Studies, School of Education, has been selected as a recipient of the “INSIGHT Into Diversity” Diversity Visionary Award. The honor recognizes Harvey’s contributions, vision, dedication and long-term commitment to diversity and inclusion.

 

Valerie Nieman

Valerie Nieman, associate professor in the Department of English and award-winning author and poet, has a new book. “Hotel Worthy” is a collection of poems about love, loss and survival that will be published in March. Nieman was the 2013-2014 North Carolina Arts Council Poetry Fellow, and she is the poetry editor for Prime Number, a journal of distinctive poetry and prose.

Dr. Ericka M. Smith

Dr. Ericka M. Smith has been appointed interim vice chancellor for human resources. Smith replaces Linda R. McAbee, who retired in December. Since 2014, she has served as assistant vice chancellor for human resources.

 

Smith has over 15 years experience in the field of human resources, most recently serving as director of university human resources (academic division) at The George Washington University, 2011-2014; human resources director, Pyramid Management (Pyramid Hotel Group), 2006-2011; and human resources manager, EverDrive LLC, 2004-2006.

 

Smith earned her Ph.D. in conflict analysis and resolution from Nova Southeastern University and her M.Ed. and B.S. degrees in administration and supervision (personnel administration) and psychology, respectively, from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr. Evelyn R. SowellsDr. Evelyn R. Sowells, adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Computer Systems Technology, recently authored “Low Power Self-Timed Size Optimization for an Input Data Distribution,” a book that explores innovative techniques to reduce power consumption for portable electronic devices. It is published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing AG & Co. KG.

 

Sowells earned her Ph.D. in electrical engineering and M.S. and B.S. degrees in computer science from N.C. A&T. Her primary research interests are in the areas of low-power high performance digital systems design, asynchronous design, self-timed digital system design and STEM education. She has numerous peer reviewed journal and conference publications. She received the 2013 Chair’s Award for Outstanding Service in the Department of Computer System Technology.
