Dr. Abdellah Ahmidouch, nuclear physics professor and chair of the Department of Physics, College of Arts and Sciences, is the recipient of a $1.49 million research grant as part of the Consortium for Nonproliferation Enabling Capabilities (CNEC), led by North Carolina State University. Ahmidouch’s work will focus on sensors for special nuclear materials (SNM) signature detection, simulation and modeling, study of the physics background channels of SNM, and curriculum development in the field of nuclear nonproliferation.
CNEC was awarded $25 million by the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Research and Development to provide the U.S. government with cutting-edge research and development to identify and address multi-disciplinary and cross-functional technology and research needs that are critical to detecting foreign nuclear weapon proliferation activities. Research projects pursued by the consortium will include technologies to enhance simulation capabilities, algorithms, and modeling; new test and evaluation models for detection sensors; new remote sensing capabilities; and applications of data analytics and data fusion to better characterize and detect special nuclear materials.
The CNEC consortium proposal won over 22 other proposals. In addition to N.C. A&T, the consortium includes the University of Michigan, Purdue, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, Kansas State, Georgia Tech and three national laboratories, Los Alamos, Oak Ridge and Pacific Northwest.
Dr. Valerie L. Giddings, associate professor and chair of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, was accepted for the Fall 2014 Food Systems Leadership Institute (FSLI), an executive leadership development program for academia, industry and government. The FSLI enhances personal and professional development by emphasizing leadership competencies, skills for organizational change, and a broad, interdisciplinary perspective of food systems. The FSLI experience prepares scholars for upper-level leadership roles in food system programs, and to assume broader leadership responsibilities within their organizations.
During the two-year FSLI program, scholars work with expert instructors, leadership development coaches and an upper level mentor to help increase their leadership abilities. They meet with leaders of universities, political leaders, industry leaders and others who have advanced to the highest levels of leadership. Leadership theory is combined with practical experience, often in the context of food systems and higher education.
Dr. Ericka M. Smith has been appointed interim vice chancellor for human resources. Smith replaces Linda R. McAbee, who retired in December. Since 2014, she has served as assistant vice chancellor for human resources.

Smith earned her Ph.D. in conflict analysis and resolution from Nova Southeastern University and her M.Ed. and B.S. degrees in administration and supervision (personnel administration) and psychology, respectively, from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Dr. Kim Smith, assistant professor of journalism and mass communication, has joined the Community Advisory Group at WFDD, 88.5-FM, the public radio station at Wake Forest University.
As one of the groups’ 11 members—a volunteer position—Smith will “assist station staff in developing strong community partnerships, while advising station management on strategic decisions related to programming and audience development.”
Smith has had a long-time association with public radio. He has served as a public radio news director and freelance reporter for National Public Radio and has won a number of journalism awards from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Associated Press and the Society of Professional Journalists.
