$1.19 MILLION NSF GRANT

The National Science Foundation has awarded a $1.19 million grant to support the North Carolina A&Teach STEM Scholars Program, which aims to produce and support highly qualified K-12 science, technology, engineering and mathematics educators (STEM) who can effectively deliver inquiry-based instruction that is concurrently culturally relevant to students in high-need schools.more

GREENSBORO AS PART OF 125
SERVICE PROJECTS

As part of the initiative to complete 125 service projects in observance of North Carolina A&T State University’s 125th anniversary celebration, a team of Aggies participated in Big Sweep Greensboro on Sept. 12, becoming the first group of volunteers to complete its “125” service project.more

Eduroam Wireless Network

Eduroam (education roaming), an international wireless roaming service for users in research and higher education, is now available at North Carolina A&T State University. The service provides researchers, teachers and students easy and secure network access when visiting an institution other than their own. Authentication of users is performed by the home institution, using the same credentials as when they access the network locally, while authorization to access the Internet and possibly other resources are handled by the visited institution. Users do not have to pay for eduroam wireless access.

MORE-STEM REU and Graduate School Fair

MORE-STEM (Maximizing Opportunities in Research Experiences promotes interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) is sponsoring a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) and Graduate School Fair 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, in Barnes Hall. Workshops on preparing a CV personal statement and the value of summer research and internships will be presented. Graduate school representatives from across the country will be present to answer questions about graduate school programs, summer opportunities and admission requirements. Hispanic Heritage Month

Gov. Pat McCrory has proclaimed Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, 2015, as Hispanic Heritage Month in North Carolina. Sept. 15 was chosen due to the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Additionally, Mexico declared its independence Sept. 16 and Chile Sept. 18. Hispanic Heritage Month is a time of celebration and appreciation of the rich culture, tradition and numerous contributions made by the Hispanic community in our state and nation.

TV Show Debut Rescheduled

The debut of “Triad Perspectives,” a new 30-minute weekly television program produced by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (JOMC) that will highlight good news in the community and on campus, has been rescheduled for Monday, Sept. 21. The show will be on Time Warner Cable, Channel 69, 5:30–6 p.m. Mondays, as well as on UNC-TV, the university’s closed-circuit system, YouTube and the JOMC website. In addition, the audio portion of the show will be aired on the university’s radio station, WNAA 90.1 FM.

The next Faculty Senate Meeting will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, in the Academic Classroom Building, room 101. The meeting can also be viewed at the following link: http://bit.ly/1KdHMSk. Faculty members are encouraged to click on the link at any time before the meeting to ensure their ability to view the presentation, which can also be accessed as an on demand recording using the same link. Gift of Scholarship

To commemorate the quasquicentennial anniversary of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, a goal has been established to raise $1.25 million for student scholarships during the 2015-16 academic year. Gifts made toward any scholarship will be counted. Additionally, an anonymous donor has pledged to match – dollar for dollar – gifts designated to any scholarship fund up to $125,000 from first-time alumni donors. Dr. Zerihun Assefa

Dr. Zerihun Assefa, professor of chemistry, and George Agbeworvi, Ph.D. student at Purdue University, have published a peer reviewed article, “Crystal structure of tert-butyldiphenylphosphine oxide,” in the journal of Acta Crystallographica (Vol. 71, Part 6, June 2015, E71, o400).

 

 

 

Dr. Ceola Ross BaberDr. Ceola Ross Baber, professor of leadership studies, is a co-author of “Community Member and Stakeholder Perspectives on a Healthy Environment Initiative in North Carolina,” which was published in Preventing Chronic Disease (August 2015).

 

 

 

 

Dr. Luba Kurkalova

Dr. Luba Kurkalova, professor in the Department of Economics and the Department of Energy and Environmental Systems, has published a paper, “Impact of energy prices and cellulosic biomass supply on agriculture, energy, and the environment: An integrated modeling approach,” in Energy Economics (2015, Vol. 51, pp. 77–87). The study is co-authored with R.C. Dodder (U.S. EPA), P.O. Kaplan (U.S. EPA), A. Elobeid (ISU), S. Tokgoz (IFPRI), and S. Secchi (SIU).

Dr. Jerono P. RotichDr. Jerono P. Rotich, professor and interim chair of the Department of Human Performance and Leisure Studies, spoke on “Making a Difference: Women Empowerment” at the 2015 Gottabgaa International Conference in Washington, D.C., July 9–12. Rotich also co-presented a paper, “The Relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Life Satisfaction among the Basketball Players,” at the ERPA 2015 International Congress on Education in Athens, Greece, in June, and was the keynote speaker at the 2015 University Recognition and Awards Banquet for SPA and EPA Non-Faculty Employees at N.C. A&T in June.

Dr. Shengbin Wang

“Personnel Scheduling and Supplies Provisioning in Emergency Relief Operations,” a manuscript by Dr. Shengbin Wang, has been accepted for publication in Annals of Operations Research. Wang is an assistant professor in the Department of Marketing, Transportation and Supply Chain.
