Dr. Zerihun Assefa, professor and interim chair of chemistry, and former graduate student George Agbeworvi have published a peer reviewed article, “Higher coordinate gold(I) complexes with the weak Lewis base tri(4-fluorophenyl) phosphine. Synthesis, structural, luminescence, and DFT studies,”in The Journal of Molecular Structure (Vol. 1108, 15 March 2016, pp. 508-515). Agbeworvi is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program at Purdue University.
Dr. Solomon Bililign, professor of physics and principal investigator (PI), along with co-PI Dr. Marc Fiddler, adjunct professor and co-PI, received a $488,281 three-year grant from the National Science Foundation, Atmospheric Chemistry Program, to study optical and chemical properties of biomass burning aerosols.
Bililign’s atmospheric chemistry/physics research group will conduct a laboratory study to investigate how the chemical and optical properties of biomass burning aerosols (soot) change as they age in the atmosphere and how they impact global and regional climate systems. Considering the extensive use of biomass fuel in the developing world and increased occurrence of wild fires in the United States, such controlled laboratory studies are of significant importance and will aid remote and satellite measurements. Some of the measurements will also be done at the laboratory of Dr. Jason Surratt, associate professor at the UNC Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health, Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, through contracts.
Dr. Loury Ollison Floyd, associate professor and associate dean in the School of Education, has been invited to serve as a member of the advisory board for the BRIDGES Academic Leadership Program for Women. Floyd will serve as an advisory board member for a three-year period.
Now in its 24th year, BRIDGES is an intensive professional development experience designed for women who seek to gain or strengthen their academic leadership capabilities. The program, which is sponsored by UNC Chapel Hill, received national recognition as the 2013 recipient of the American Council on Education’s State Network Leadership Award. BRIDGES has nearly 800 alumnae working in various faculty and administrative positions in North Carolina institutions of higher education and around the country.
