Two days after North Carolina A&T State University defeated Howard 38-10 at Aggie Stadium, Rod Broadway held his weekly press conference and talked about his satisfaction with how well the team performed.
“This is a big win for us, especially after the previous two weeks,” said Broadway, referring to the Aggies’ consecutive heartbreaking defeats. “The way we beat them speaks volumes on how good of a team we can be."
Howard came into Saturday’s game 3-0 in the MEAC. The Bison defeated the defending MEAC Champion Norfolk State, Florida A&M and Savannah State. They had preseason All-MEAC quarterback Greg McGhee playing well and Terrence Lefall came in leading the conference in rushing. Yet, the Aggies were able to shut out the Bison in the second half. As the season progresses the Aggies hope to build on their momentum.
“We have to continue to get better,” Broadway told the reporters in the Bryan Fitness and Wellness Center. "If we can continue to get better and better every week we will have a chance. In this game, a chance is all you ask for.”
The Aggies seem to have a chance now that preseason MEAC Player of the Year Mike Mayhew is back to form. He had 138 yards and a touchdown on Saturday and is averaging 128 yards per game against Delaware State in his career. Defensively, the Aggies intercepted three passes and returned two for touchdowns. Junior D’Vonte Graham had two of those picks, and he returned a punt 77 yards.
“D'Vonte is weapon for us,” Broadway said. “He has a great feel for the game and he possesses the tools to become a great football player.”
Junior safety Travis Crosby also played well as he seeks to earn All-American honors. The Howard game marked the fifth time in six games, the Charlotte native has led the Aggies in tackles.
“We have always played good defense despite being undersized,” Broadway said. “Sometimes we just get worn out because we just don't have the numbers that other schools do. Hopefully, next year we can add numbers to the team.”
A&T will travel to Dover, Del., this weekend to play Delaware State for the homecoming game. The last time the Aggies won in Dover was in 2002.
“Delaware State is much more improved than they were last season,” said Broadway about the Hornets who were 3-8 in 2011, including a 42-24 loss to A&T. “I would say it’s just as good of a match up as Howard.” |
