North Carolina A&T State University’s best teachers were recently honored during the combined Teaching Excellence and Research Excellence Awards Dinner at the Alumni-Foundation Event Center. The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Teresa Jo Styles, recipient of the 2012 UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching.
The 2013 Outstanding Teaching Awards were presented to Drs. Stephanie Luster-Teasley, Gregory Goins, Guochen Yang,. Joanne Utley and David Lundberg.
Luster –Teasley received the UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Outstanding College of Engineering Teaching Award. She brings the excitement of real-world, hands-on experience into all of her engineering courses, using a variety of research-based pedagogical methods. She strives to educate her students for life, not just a career.
Goins was the recipient of the outstanding College of Arts and Sciences Teaching Award. His teaching focuses on inquiry and discovery-based learning, actively engaging students in the process of learning both within and outside the classroom.
Yang received the outstanding School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences Teaching Award. He makes extensive use of “team work” in his courses to promote active student learning and prepares students to solve complex, unstructured problems, simulating what they will need to do in their future careers.
Utley is the recipient of the Outstanding School of Business and Economics Teaching Award. She has taught her students to effectively apply mathematical modeling techniques to improve business decision-making.
Lundberg received the outstanding School of Education Teaching Award. He integrates traditional teaching pedagogy with experiential learning to help students gain not only conceptual understanding but also professional skills as career and group counselors.
The Junior Faculty Teaching Excellence Awards were presented to Anna Reaves, School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences and Dr. Lisa Owens-Jackson, School of Business and Economics.
Reaves draws on her own experience to foster critical thinking, creativity, passion, and professionalism in the students. Owens-Jackson thrives on challenging her students and watching them grow beyond their expectations.
The 2013 Advising Excellence Award winner was Dr. Stephen McCary-Henderson, School of Education, Department of Curriculum and Instruction. McCary-Henderson has advised students for 24 years and currently serves as the coordinator of academic advising in his department. |
