Canisha Turner, an agricultural business management major, will head the administration as the 2013-2014 Student Government Association (SGA) president. The leadership position has been one that Turner has been striving for since her freshman year.
“I always wanted to be heavily involved with student government,” said Turner. “I was involved at my high school. I served as SGA president and I wanted to do the same thing at A&T.”
The new Mister North Carolina A&T State University, Anthony Fitzhugh also remembers wanting the position since his freshman year.
“It’s something I always wanted to do. I developed a love and interest for it when I became a freshman,” he says.
The allure of executive leadership arrived with more certainty for Fitzhugh and Turner, who both ran unopposed during the spring elections. Ambriya Neal, a journalism and mass communication major, had to outscore four other hopefuls to become Miss North Carolina A&T State University. Like her fellow administrators Neal also had her eye on the crown from a young age.
"I've always wanted to do it, I actually ran for Miss Freshman while I was at another school," says the transfer student and future queen.
Each student shares a long-time desire and passion to serve the student body at N.C. A&T. Although they are similar in that regard, they each have a unique aspect they want to bring to campus.
For Turner, she intends on re-implementing structure and re-establishing SGA as a governing body above all else.
"For so long, especially for the past couple of years, student government has gotten away from its sole purpose. Our sole purpose is governance, advocacy and action," Turner said.
Fitzhugh plans to incorporate his academic discipline in his platform. As a sports science and fitness management major, he intends on promoting a healthy campus.
"I definitely want to see the healthier aspects of campus -- bringing health and wellness back to the university," he says.
Neal anticipates working with students while following the prestigious legacy of the queens before her.
The 2013-2014 SGA leaders are ready to embark on a journey to make A&T better for the student body.
"We were created in 1939 to be the voice of the students," Turner said.
Other members of the 2013-2014 SGA board includes vice president of internal affairs, Isiah Guinyard; vice president of external affairs, Ryan Marcus; treasurer, Alexis Cash; and secretary, Tiffany Carson.
