The 2013 MEAC Champions recently completed their recruiting class by signing Michael Briscoe (PG, 6-1, Waldorf, Md., Thomas Stone), North Carolina A&T State University men’s basketball coach Cy Alexander announced.
Briscoe’s high school career as point guard is an impressive one. As a senior, he led the Cougars to the Maryland 3A South championship game, while averaging 19.8 points, 9.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game. In the title game, Briscoe scored 18 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds against No. 8 Potomac. During the prior season, Briscoe earned All-County Athlete of the Year honors after leading the Cougars to a Class 3A South Region championship and runner-up in the state championship game. He averaged 14.0 points and 4.0 assists per game.
As a three-year starter, Briscoe earned three All-SMAC recognitions, including two first-team selections. He also scored 1,157 points over his career, second all-time in Thomas Stone history, and secured All-Met honorable mention accolades under coach Dale Lamberth.
“I feel like we brought in a point guard with a bright future and a high basketball IQ,” said Alexander, the 2013 NCBA Division I District 15 Coach of the Year. “He has the ability to pass, and he has the ability to score. What we like about him is his high basketball IQ. He has the chance to come in here and compete for playing time as a freshman. He has a chance to play against Jeremy [Underwood] and Lamont [Middleton] every day, and he can gain from their experience. We are excited about him coming to be a part of the team.”
Briscoe joins other signees Maurice Taylor (F, 6-7, Chesnut, Mass., Beaver Country Day), Bryan Akinkugbe (F, 6-9, Bowie, Md., Columbia State College), Khary Doby (F, 6-7, Upper Marlboro, Md., Riverdale Baptist), Steven Burrough (F, 6-9, Charlotte, N.C., Harding), Nicholas Reese (G, Los Angeles, Calif., Westchester), Jerome Simmons (F, 6-8, Jacksonville, N.C., Massanutten, Military Academy) and James Whitaker (F, 6-5, Portsmouth, Va.). Football signee Denzel Keyes (G, 6-4, Kinston, N.C., Kinston) will also compete for the A&T men’s basketball team in 2013-14.
The Aggies return two starters, guard Middleton and center Bruce Beckford, as well as reserve guard Underwood next season. |
