North Carolina A&T sophomore Aleena McDaniel was named third-team All-MEAC for volleyball, the league announced on Thursday evening.

McDaniel, a 5-10 outside hitter, led the Aggies in kills per set (2.65). The Indianapolis native is also second on the team in digs (252) and service aces (18). McDaniel has also tallied 29 blocks this season.

She has led A&T in kills in 16 matches and had six matches of 15 or more kills. Additionally, she has posted five double-doubles and led the Aggies in digs seven times.

“We are very happy for Aleena,” head coach Hal Clifton said. “It’s nice that coaches and sports information directors recognized her effort this year. She has been a very steady player for us this year and has worked very hard to make the transition from middle to outside.”

McDaniel, along with sophomore libero Ashley Johnson, sophomore defensive specialist Jasmine Jones and sophomore outside hitter Brooke Stamnes were placed on the All-Academic team.

“I’m very excited about the academic progress of our team,” Clifton said. “Our ladies are focused in the classroom and it shows. Our goal is to have everyone on this team eligible for the all-academic award, and we are not that far off.”

MEAC sophomore, junior and senior student-athletes with a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average as well as transfer student-athletes who have been in residence at the institution for at least one year are eligible for All-Academic accolades.

“I applaud our volleyball student-athletes who have maintained a 3.0 or better grade point average during the 2012-13 academic school year,” said Commissioner Dennis E. Thomas. “I would further like to commend the coaches and academic support staffs for their contributions to the academic success of our student-athletes.”
