Student-Body Elects New 2014-15 Leadership

Dorian Davis, a junior journalism and mass communications major, will lead students into the 2014-2015 academic year as the newly elected president of the student government association (SGA).

Davis, a native of Raleigh, N.C., has had a passion for making a difference in the Aggie community since his freshman year. He has served in several leadership positions—his most recent position was president of the Junior Class Council where he helped organize a book voucher fund for A&T students.

As an intern for former SGA President Christian Robinson (2011-2012), Davis was introduced to the importance of student service.

“Seeing him unify the campus made me excited and eager to join and be a part of a cause similar to his,” he said.

The new Mister North Carolina A&T State University James Bowen III, of Ridgewood, N.C., was also inspired during his freshman year by his mentor.

“I became Mr. Freshman because I wanted to [challenge] myself and step out of my comfort zone. When I met my Mister A&T, Jordan Brunson (2011-2012), he mentored me and was a big brother figure. I wanted to be that for someone else,” he said.

Each candidate ran opposed, which made for an intense campaign season.

Jordan Outing from Chesapeake, Va., won the Miss North Carolina A&T State University title after an additional run-off election.

“Since freshman year I wanted to run for Miss Senior and at the end of first semester of junior year I began to wonder why I wasn’t running for Miss A&T,” she said.

“I used to think that this position was too large for me, but as time progressed, I realized how much I love this university. I have been involved with so many aspects of this university,” she said.

Each student plans to contribute something unique to the administration.
For Davis, his goal is to emphasize student equality—which was one of the components of his campaign.

“I want every student to feel represented. I want students to feel like they are wanted and needed and that what they want is seen by the administration,” he said.

Bowen plans to create a website that will allow students to communicate faster and easier with members of SGA.

“If students want to learn more information about SGA or if they want to see what events are coming up on campus or even submit comments about things that they are concerned about. This will give us a better opportunity to stay connected,” he explained.

Outing wants SGA officers to have a more prominent and inviting presence on campus.

“I want to make sure students feel connected to [us], and we are not just figures walking around waving our hands, smiling and taking pictures. We want students to be able to talk to us because we are real people and we represent the students,” she shared.

Student Government Association Executive Board 2014-2015 members also include:

Vice President for Internal Affairs, Taylor Coltrane
Vice President for External Affairs, James L. Brown
SGA Secretary, Kayla J. Baker
SGA Treasurer, Gabrielle J. Gray
Attorney General, Me’Lia P. Covington
