The North Carolina A&T bowling team moved up three spots to 10th in this week’s National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) poll.
The Aggies (40-20 overall) earned their highest ranking in school history thanks to a solid start that included wins over nationally ranked LIU Brooklyn, St. Francis (N.Y.), Delaware State, Sam Houston State, Arkansas State, Wisconsin-Whitewater and Maryland Eastern Shore.
The team goes into the holiday break leading the MEAC Southern Division with a 12-4 conference record.
Last weekend, the team finished second at the division meet hosted by Norfolk State.
The Aggies posted a 5-3 record in the meet, trailing only Norfolk State (27-14 overall, 10-6 MEAC), which finished with 7-1 mark at the divisional.
On Saturday, 13th-ranked A&T went 3-1 in traditional team games and defeated Bethune-Cookman (1,000-944), Florida A&M (1,046-847), and N.C. Central (919-680). The Aggies fell 1,007-922 to NSU as they put together a 194.9 team average throughout the traditional games, Saturday’s highest score.
Junior Emily Strombeck (219.50) and freshman Kori Smith (217.25) were the top overall finishers on Saturday. Strombeck pinned a career-high 269 in A&T’s win over FAMU. Smith tallied four 200-plus games, including a 223 over NCCU.
Sunday’s competition featured four baker games. The Aggies opened with a 1,013-764 win over NCCU. The Aggies also went on to top FAMU 1,069-823 but dropped matches to BCU (1.019-882) and NSU (1,188-945).
A&T returns to action in 2015 when they visit Reading, Pa., for the Kutztown Invitational on Jan. 23-25. |
