| It has been the tale of their season. It’s what they live by and pride themselves on. It’s also the way they guard opponents with rigorous attention to detail, the way they wait patiently for the perfect time to grab a steal, and the way they limit their opponents on offense, which is why the Aggies are ranked ninth in the country in scoring defense.
The North Carolina A&T (21-4 overall) women’s basketball is on its way to another successful year with the hopes of making it to the postseason in a few short weeks.
Its hard work has been visible all season, especially in the national rankings. The Aggies have been ranked all throughout the season in statistical categories by the NCAA but the one category that has remained consistent is scoring defense.
A&T, who was just ranked eighth in scoring defense last week, is now ninth out of 343 teams and has held its opponents to an average of 55.0 points. The Aggies have made it tough for teams to put up points against them, especially at Corbett Sports Center where teams have scored an average of 50.2 points.
The Aggies defense has held teams to under 50 points nine times this season. A&T has forced its opponents to turn the ball over 541 times and has recorded 239 steals behind senior leader Tracy King. King has helped spearhead A&T’s defense by averaging 3.2 steals a game, which is second in the nation out of 250 players.
A&T has three regular-season conference games remaining. The Aggies will host Savannah State on Saturday, Mar.1 and S.C. State on Monday, Mar. 3. The Aggies travel to Virginia on Thursday, Mar. 6 for the regular-season finale against Hampton (23-4) who is undefeated in the MEAC with a 14-0 record. |
