The American Chemical Society (ACS) student chapter at North Carolina A&T State University has been selected to receive a Commendable Award for its activities conducted during the 2012-2013 academic year.
The Society Committee on Education presented 53 outstanding, 85 commendable, and 125 honorable mention awards. Lists of award winning chapters were published in Chemical & Engineering News and in the November/December issue of in Chemistry, the student member magazine. The award winning chapters will also be honored at the 247th American Chemical Society National Meeting in Dallas, Tex. on March 16.
Dr. Marion A. Franks, associate professor in the chemistry department, is the faculty advisor for the ACS student chapter.
Dr. Franks became a faculty member in the department of chemistry at A&T in 2004. His research involves the synthesis or extraction of compounds that can be used as cancer chemopreventives and/or anticancer drug candidates. Dr. Franks' research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. He has also completed work within the K-12 community that was sponsored by the Agilent Foundation and the Burroughs Welcome Fund. He has served on the advisory board for in Chemistry Magazine (2007, 2008). During his time at A&T, he has had the opportunity to be a research mentor for over 25 chemistry, chemical engineering, and biology undergraduate majors, two high school students, as well as five graduate students who have received their M.S. in Chemistry. Dr. Franks has been awarded the Summer Scholars Fellowship (2009) as well as the Outstanding Junior Faculty of the Year Award for the College of Arts and Sciences (2010), and also serves as the advisor to the departmental chemistry club.
