World University Ranks A&T 10th In Sustainability

North Carolina A&T State University was ranked No. 10 by The Universitas Indonesia’s (UI) GreenMetric World University Sustainability Ranking for 2013.

The UI GreenMetric ranking list included participation from 301 universities from 61 countries. In its fourth year, the ranking compares campus sustainability and environmental friendly management systems.

“Global concerns for environmental problems and waste management present an opportunity and a challenge for N.C. A&T to mobilize academic resources and capabilities for developing sustainable solutions,” said Dr. Godfrey Uzochukwu, professor and director of the Interdisciplinary Waste Management Institute at N.C. A&T State University.

The results were released on Jan. 17.

University of Nottingham (UK) was ranked No. 1 with a score of 7521, followed by University College Cork National University of Ireland, 7328, and Northeastern University (USA), 7170.

Rounding out the top 10 were University of Bradford (UK), University of Connecticut (USA), Universite de Sherbrooke (Canada), University of Plymouth (UK), University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (USA), University of California, Davis (USA) and N.C. A&T.

In addition to A&T’s overall 10th place ranking with a score of 6775, the university placed at No. 5 among 164 colleges/universities in the category of Campus Setting (Urban) and No. 9 among 224 colleges/universities for Higher Education (Comprehensive).

Apart from the USA, Japan, UK and other European countries that participated in the previous year's ranking, the 2013 results include universities from Morocco, Egypt, Namibia, Cyprus, Slovenia, Estonia, Ukraine, Portugal, Philippines, Iran, Jordan, Panama and Pakistan.

The results are computed from information provided by universities online. The six main categories and their weightings are as follows: energy and climate change, 21 percent; waste management, 18 percent; transportation, 18 percent; education, 18 percent; setting and infrastructure, 15 percent; and water usage, 10 percent.
