| The Graduate Student Advisory Council of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University took the National Association of Graduate and Professional Students (NAGPS) 27th Annual Conference by storm in November; making history as the first HBCU to become a voting member of the organization and claiming two national offices as well as three regional offices. A&T graduate student council members also presented in breakout and poster sessions at the four-day conference.
The NAGPS is made up of over 90 universities throughout the country. A&T’s Graduate Student Advisory Council became the first HBCU voting member amongst the ranks of Carnegie Mellon University Graduate Student Assembly, Duke University Graduate and Professional Student Council, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Graduate Student Council, Harvard University Graduate Student Council and Syracuse University Graduate Student Organization.
Dwayne A. Johnson (president), Tiffany Richardson (exec. vice president), Brittany Glover (chief of staff), and graduate student representatives Amber Urooj (School of Education) and Osejie Oriaifo (School of Agriculture) are all members of the newly organized Graduate Student Advisory Council. At the conference Johnson was elected as the National Chairman of Social Justice and Diversity. Glover was elected as the Southeast Regional Director of Communications and Urooj was elected at the Southeast Regional Chair of Employee Relations.
About the National Association of Graduate and Professional Students
In response to Congress eliminating the tax-exempt status of graduate stipends, the idea of a national graduate student association was discussed by graduate students from four schools attending the First National Teaching Assistant Training Conference at The Ohio State University in the spring of 1986.This group called the first national meeting in March 1987 at Washington State University. The group became the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students (NAGPS) at this meeting. A national conference coordinator, information exchange coordinator, legislative concerns coordinator, and five regional coordinators were selected.

The Graduate Student Advisory Council is an advocate for effective growth and development of the graduate community. Its mission is simple and holistic in nature. The GSAC serves its members by representing the needs and desires of a diverse graduate student population. The GSAC promotes organized events that will allow students to unite through service, professional development and social enjoyment. The GSAC recognizes issues and concerns affecting graduate students and encourage effective communication and robust collaboration across the university community.
