| North Carolina A&T head women’s tennis coach Bruce Myers announced the signing of three recruits to the program for the 2015 season, on Tuesday. Nadia Hilton-Adams (Simpsonville, S.C./Southside High School), Khalia Powell (Chicago, IL/De La Salle Institute) and Alexus Morgan (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek High School) will try to elevate the Aggies to the top of the MEAC over their careers.
“There is no better feeling than being able to completely upgrade your tennis program in one day,” Myers said about the three signees.
“By signing Khalia, Nadia and Alexus, we instantly become deeper and more talented. Plus bringing in three players who will play up top in our lineup allows the rest of our team to play positions they will be more likely to do well in. Training with players of their level will help raise everyone’s game and make our practices lively and competitive. Needless to say, I cannot wait to get started this fall.”
Hilton-Adams has been the No. 1 singles and doubles player at Southside since her freshman year. She has also earned MVP and all-region honors throughout her high school career. Hilton-Adams also made an appearance on the Tennis Channel after she won a national essay contest that gave her opportunity to spend time with Maria Sharapova in a hitting session before the U.S. Open in 2011. She was also honored as Talk Magazine’s “25 Most Beautiful” thanks to her efforts in the Greenville, S.C., community.
“I have never seen anyone work harder or more frequently on their tennis game than Nadia,” Myers said. “She’s also a model student-athlete who has founded her own nonprofit.”
Powell, a 3-star recruit, won the GCAC catholic league tournament and went 13-0 in the 2013 season. She also finished in the top 12 of the Illinois State tournament.
“Khalia is a monumental signing for our women’s tennis program,” said Myers. “She is a 3-star recruit who was heavily recruited at a bunch of quality schools. She has three wins vs. 4-star players including girls who will be attending other NCAA Division I programs like Delaware and Butler this fall. Khalia will play a pivotal role in quickly rebuilding our women’s tennis program. She brings immediate respect to our program. I am thrilled to be able to work with her this fall.”
Morgan has Aggie pedigree. Her mother is a graduate of A&T. She is a 1-star player with wins over 2-star opponents. She trains in Charlotte with former A&T men’s tennis player Calvin Davis.
“She has had a lot involvement with Aggies over her lifetime, so she will come to A&T fully knowing what Aggie Pride is,” said Myers. “I think she will really flourish at the Division I level.”
