N.C. A&T Receives STEM Grant to Support Women

N.C. A&T has made progress in recruiting and advancing women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the STEM disciplines. Women are among the university’s most high-profile researchers, and the deans of two STEM-related academic units are women.

Overall, however, women remain severely underrepresented in tenured and tenure-track faculty positions within A&T’s STEM departments.

The university will take steps to change that as the recipient of a grant from the National Science Foundation’s ADVANCE program.

The ADVANCE program’s goal is to develop systemic approaches to increase the representation, advancement and retention of women faculty in academic science and engineering careers, thereby contributing to the development of a more diverse science and engineering workforce.

Dr. Robin Coger, dean of the College of Engineering (pictured on pervious page), and Dr. Goldie Byrd, dean of the College and Arts and Sciences (pictured above), along with faculty members Drs. Stephanie Luster-Teasley and Zakiya Wilson will be actively involved in the project.

The goal is for the university to be proactive in creating an environment conducive to the growth, development, and advancement of all faculty members, but particularly women, in an equitable and progressive manner.

The project aims to:

  • Promote equity and reduce barriers for the recruitment and advancement of women at all academic levels;
  • Foster women’s abilities in the areas of scholarship and engagement; and
  • Inform best practices for the advancement of women through a deeper understanding of the roles of gender and the intersection of race and gender.
