The College of Arts & Sciences recently appointed Dr. Yahya R. Kamalipour as chair of the department of journalism and mass communication (JOMC).
“As an academic builder and program developer, I am very pleased to join this progressive university and the department of journalism and mass communication. The department has tremendous potential for growth and expansion; hence, in collaboration with the JOMC faculty and administration, my goal is to move it to the next level of academic excellence and prominence,” he recently said.
Kamalipour served as a professor of mass and international communication for 14 years and head of the department of communication and creative arts for an additional 14 years while at Purdue University Calumet, located in Hammond, Ind. His areas of interest and research include globalization, media impact, international communication, Middle East media, and new communication technologies.
His responsibilities will include administration of instructional programs, budgetary management, administrative interfacing with a broad range of departmental assessment and accreditation functions, as well as, interfacing with a broad range of departmental activities. He will also provide leadership to The A&T Register, WNAA-FM 90.1, the television studio and other student led media organizations.
Profiled in the Contemporary Authors and Who’s Who in the World, he has published 14 books, including Global Communication (2nd edition) and most recently, Media, Power, and Politics in the Digital Age. He has served as an international academic consultant and an advisory/editorial board member of a dozen prominent communication journals and professional organizations.
Kamalipour is the founder and managing editor of Global Media Journal (with 14 global editions), founder and director of the Center for Global Studies, and founder and president of the Global Communication Association. He has visited over 50 countries and has been interviewed by major newspapers and broadcast media, including BBC, Reuters, ABC, VOA, RFL/RL, National Public Radio, Radio France International, Turkish TV, Indian TV, Iranian TV, Egyptian TV, Indianapolis Star, Quill Magazine, and The Washington Post.
He earned a doctorate in communication at the University of Missouri-Columbia; a master’s in mass media from the University of Wisconsin-Superior, and bachelor’s in mass communication—public relations from the Minnesota State University.
