Strong Track Performances at Winthrop

The N.C. A&T track and field teams didn’t let cold weather at the Adidas Winthrop Invitational at Winthrop's Irwin Belk Track distract them from earning multiple first-place finishes and personal bests.

The women’s sprinters set the tone. Freshman Reneazia Collins won the women’s 400 meters with a personal-best time of 55.85. Fellow freshman India Brown ran a personal-best 11.72 in the women’s 100 to take first place. Brown also took first in the women’s 200 with a time of 24.42.

Collins and Brown teamed with senior Latrese Barker and freshman Morgan Knight to finish second in the women’s 400-meter relay with a time of 46.95.

The men’s 400-meter relay team of seniors Keenan Smith, Marquis Noble and sophomores Frank Quales and Caleb Gabriel came in first as they finished first with a time of 41.01. The Aggies 400-meter relay team is now ranked first in the MEAC.

On the distance side, junior Perry Cabean ran 4:10.94 to win the men’s 1500 meter developmental section. Sophomore Darren White also finished first in the men’s 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:34.92).

Freshman Corey Aiken ran a personal-best 1:56.31 to take first place in the men’s 800. Not far behind Aiken were freshmen Steve Stowe (1:58.38) and David Conner (1:58.63), who finished third and fourth respectively.

The hurdles also went well for the Aggies as Knight came in second in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, posting a personal-best 14.04. Sophomore Francesca Evans ran 1:04.39 in the women’s 400-meter hurdles to finish third overall. Sophomore Thomas Jones also posted a personal best. He ran the 110-meter hurdles in 14.78 to finish fourth.

The sprints for the men also went well. Sophomore Dorian Claggett finished third in the men’s 400 with a time of 49.01. During the men’s 100, Gabriel (10.52) and Noble (10.57) finished fifth and sixth with personal-best performances. Gabriel also ran a personal-best 21.32 in the men’s 200 to place fourth. Smith finished sixth with a personal-best 21.57.

In the field events, freshman Aaron Deane finished third in the men’s triple jump with a jump of 45-feet, 1-inch.

In other distance events, freshman Miranda Green finished third in the women’s 1500-meter developmental section with a time of 4:59.76.

“This meet really tested us mentally and physically with regards to the weather,” said Duane Ross, director of track and field programs. “India and Reneazia had a great meet and competed well, as did Keenan and Caleb.

“We’re getting better as a team, but still have a ways to go before we become a great team. We have to start looking at the bigger picture in order to become the championships team we envision. Today’s personal bests are a start, but we have to continue to push forward.”
