Kenya Colbert

Tennis Captain Leads by Example

Kenya Colbert can still see the rainbow despite enduring many storms as a tennis player at North Carolina A&T.

Colbert, now a senior, never imagined as a freshman that she would have a new coach every year throughout her collegiate tenure. Or that she would be the consistent face of a program that has seen plenty of players come and go, too.

Colbert easily could have been one of those to leave, but she was determined to help resurrect the program.

“Even through all of the coaches, we’ve had and ups and downs we’ve faced, it’s been a great experience,” she said. “I’m glad that I became an Aggie, and I’ve enjoyed all four years.”

Colbert is the captain of the young Aggie team; her teammates are five freshmen and three sophomores. During her time at A&T, she has learned what it means to be a teammate, and she has displayed that unselfishly.

“The most important thing that I’ve learned from being a part of this team is that we are one,” Colbert explained. “We have to stick together, and teamwork is what’s most important.

“It’s been great being a leader this year. We have some great young players and I’m excited to see how they’re going to progress over the years. I hope that I’ve instilled some things in them. I hope they never give up, always remain positive and continue working hard.”

A&T faced rival N.C. Central on Monday at the Aggie Tennis Complex, where it fell 7-0. Although it was a setback, it represented something bigger for Colbert as she prepared to play in her final match as an Aggie on Saturday, April 11 against Delaware State.

“I just have to leave it all on the court,” Colbert said with a smile. “I have nothing to lose.”

What Colbert won’t be losing is her passion to stay connected to the game. She has spent her summers as a coach back home in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and she plans to continue coaching after she graduates in December.

“My hope for this program is stability,” Colbert said. “We just need someone that is going to stick with us through everything.”
