Alumnus Leads in Durham County Government as CIO

For the past two and a half years, North Carolina A&T State University graduate Greg Marrow has served as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for Durham County Government.

“I’m responsible for managing information technology across the County of Durham, supporting all internal agencies including the health department, social services and overall emergency management,” Marrow said. “I’m also responsible for setting technology direction and providing strategic guidance for the county.”

Many of the processes that Marrow oversees play a major part in the lives of everyday citizens, even though the arduous back-end work is often overlooked.

“A great deal of what the county does is electronic so we prepare those web-enabled services,” he said. “Everybody is carrying around a mobile device. The expectation is that services be available via that device; so we are doing more and more to support citizens who want to do business with us from the convenience of their pocket.”

With over 30 years of professional IT experience, Marrow has successfully established himself as an expert in the field. He credits his sound education for his success.

“I was blessed to be able to attend A&T. Going through the engineering (undergraduate and graduate) programs helped to provide that rigor and discipline that is required to manage and run a tech organization,” he said. “It prepared me through technical guidance and skills, at least the foundation, and the ability to interact with faculty members and others, to take on leadership roles like Durham County Government.”

Marrow says it’s the discipline of being able to focus on a problem and produce a specific solution that has been extremely beneficial to his success.

“A&T gave me the foundation, which was great, but after that I had to dedicate myself to life-long learning,” he said. “I make sure to get out to conferences. You have to keep up with what’s going on in the IT field. That’s probably the only way to stay on the front line. You can’t do it in the office.”

Marrow maintains a steady schedule attending continuing education programs geared toward IT and specifically CIOs to make sure he stays on the cutting-edge in technological advancements. With a master’s degree and several certifications under his belt, Marrow is considering obtaining his PhD, he says perhaps though N.C. A&T’s Leadership program.
