The North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team won its fourth straight game with a 58-33 victory over rival North Carolina Central on Saturday at Corbett Sports Center.
The Aggies (13-10 overall, 6-4 MEAC) extended their own win streak and stopped one for the Eagles, who had won three in a row. With the loss, NCCU fell to 6-16 overall and 4-6 in the league.
“I think we’re continuing to move in the right direction,” head coach Tarrell Robinson said.
“I thought we got out slow to open the game, but we really responded in the second half. We held NCCU to 10 points in the second half. We had a lot of good looks in the first half, but we just didn’t make them. In the second half we did. We also closed in the rebounding gap.”
A&T’s guard trio of Dana Brown, Debbie Smith and Adriana Nazario along with its top-notch defense continued to flourish on Saturday as the Aggies won its 10th straight game over the Eagles. The Aggies also recorded their fourth straight game holding their opponents to 50 points or fewer.
Nazario led the Aggies with 12 points, followed by Brown with 11 and Smith with 10.
“I’ve really been impressed with our defense,” Robinson said. “Our guard play has really been getting after it, too, during this streak. Dana does a heckuva job pressuring the ball and defending. We’ve done a good job of rebounding but the defensive effort has been really exciting to watch.”
The Aggies led by only five points, 28-23, at halftime, but in the second half they completely shut down any chance of an Eagles comeback. Holding NCCU to just 10 points in the second half marked the first time they’ve held an opponent to 15 points or less in a half since holding Virginia-Lynchburg to 12 points in the second half on Dec. 7, 2013.
NCCU’s Morgan Jones led all scorers with 13 points while Raquel Davis recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
A&T will visit Florida for games against Florida A&M on Saturday, Feb. 14, and Bethune-Cookman on Monday, Feb. 16.
“Next weekend is the most pivotal part of our season,” said Robinson. “As long as we continue to win, we’ll move up in the standings. With next weekend being our last road series it’s important that we come out with a win.” |
