Student health care at N.C. A&T no longer relies on a facility built almost 60 years ago to accommodate a campus of 2,900 students. With Sebastian Health Center sitting empty for now, awaiting a decision on its future use, last week the university officially opened a spacious and far more functional student health building.
Located on Benbow Road at Bluford Street, the new Student Health Center is about two-and-a-half times the size of Sebastian, 27,548 square feet compared to 11,000. It has the space needed to serve 10,700 students today and more in the future.
The building meets LEED Silver requirements and construction standards, making it A&T’s first completely green facility.
The size of the new center relieves overcrowding that resulted in a lack of space for storage and offices. And the wait times for students will decrease with 11 exam rooms, compared to three in Sebastian.
The Student Health Center is better equipped to accommodate advancing medical technology and provides easy access for emergency vehicles. The building meets all requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act and includes:
- Two fully equipped nurses stations
- Two kiosks self-service check-in
- A diagnostic treatment room
- Women’s health services
- Prevention and maintenance education
- Seminar rooms
- Modern pharmacy
- Laboratory diagnostic area
- Immunization area
- Secure record retention area
- Psychiatry services
- Counseling areas
