Engineering Student Wins National Award

Alexandria Ward has been named winner of the Black Engineer of the Year (BEYA) Student Military Leadership Award. She is a senior from Durham majoring in industrial and systems engineering.

Ward will be recognized at the 29th Annual Black BEYA Awards STEM Conference in Washington on Saturday, Feb. 6.

After graduation, she will join the U.S. Coast Guard and attend officer candidate school, where she will train to serve as an officer with the ultimate goal of becoming a pilot.

"Many people go through life passively accepting the world as it is rather than accepting the challenge to be the difference the world needs,” Ward says.

“As president of the Institute of Industrial Engineering (IIE) student chapter here at N.C. A&T, I take great pride and responsibility in empowering our members and the engineering community to be that difference by encouraging them to develop themselves as ethical engineers.

“I hope to continue to grow as a leader and positively impact the lives of others globally in the field of aviation. I am honored and thankful to be recognized by BEYA for the Student Military Leadership Award."

A national awards program, BEYA recognizes high achievers who demonstrate excellence in engineering and leadership and who are making significant contributions to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
