Martin and 93 others were honored at a reception at High Point University on Nov. 5.

Martin joined A&T in 2009 as the university’s first alumnus to serve as the chief administrator. Drawing from his experiences as a student, educator and administrator, he has brought to the university visionary leadership and a commitment to continue the university’s 125-year legacy of excellence by establishing and cultivating academically sound and relevant, strategic partnerships.

According to the Business Journal, this year’s honorees “represent a broad cross-section of our economy, and the list includes business executives, community leaders and philanthropic champions.”

A native of Winston-Salem, Martin is a member of the U.S. Senate Education Task Force, the USDA/1890 Task Force, the NCAA HBCU & LRI Advisory Group, the North Carolina New Schools Program board, the Piedmont Triad Development Council Board of Directors, Piedmont Federal Savings Bank and many others.

Prior to his appointment at A&T, Martin was the senior vice president for academic affairs at the University of North Carolina, General Administration. He served as chancellor of Winston Salem State University and held several positions at A&T including vice chancellor for academic affairs, dean of the College of Engineering, chairman and acting chairman of the department of electrical engineering and professor.

He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from A&T and his doctorate from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He is married to the former Davida Wagner, county attorney for Forsyth County and they are the parents of two sons, Harold Jr. and Walter.
