N.C. A&T’s 56th Sit-in Anniversary Events Set

North Carolina A&T State University will pause to honor the legacy of four freshmen who sparked change in America with a series of events beginning at 7:30 a.m., Feb. 1 in the Alumni-Foundation Event Center.

This year marks the 56th anniversary of the day N.C. A&T students Ezell Blair (Jibreel Khazan), Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil and David Richmond (A&T Four) sat down at a segregated lunch counter at F.W. Woolworth in Greensboro, igniting similar demonstrations all across the country.

This year’s celebration will include a student-led march to the International Civil Rights Museum, a conversation with the A&T Four on campus, a memorial at the February One monument on campus and the annual breakfast that will include the presentation of the Human Rights Medal award.

The Human Rights Medal award is bestowed annually to recognize individuals who have endeavored to correct social injustice and have significantly contributed to the betterment of the world. The award is given in honor of the extraordinary action against social injustice by the A&T Four.

This year’s recipient is a long-time educator whose focus has been to “to provide all of our children regardless of race, ethnicity, age, socioeconomic status, or ability with a quality education that could propel them toward greatness.”
